Trefethen Cabernet 2009 Oak Knoll

Post by jmccready »

Nice to find a Napa cab with the great fruit of a prestigious site but not at all jammy-classic claret structure. Should be a BWE style
but I don't dismiss more fruity Cal cabs. This winery has generally been tops to me, but there are surely different opinions out there. The vintage
or winemaking/vineyard? JM

I liked a lot of 2009's when we were in Napa in the fall, but it doesn't get high marks in the "vintage chart" sense. So maybe the vintage, steering the winemaker towards a more BWE-friendly style?

My first guess would be the vintage but I haven't had enough Cal cabs from 09 to say. It was a cool growing season by one report which confirms your
comment about modest vintage ratings for 09. If an average vintage in Cal regarding Cabs gives elegance and structure then I will take it. Will be in
Napa and Sonoma in July so will taste through some vintages I hope. JM
