TN: a new wave Spanish wine.

2011 Nas del Gegant; DO Conca de Barberà: Celler Escoda-Sanahuja
smoke, earth, meat and stewed plum, quite bold and full but with a linear bright acidity that runs underneath holding everything together. It has the "natural" tart apple feel to it. Rich and fruity but racy and lean all at once. Tobacco leaf, herbs, braised pork. Some red fruit lingers underneath, with a slight greenness to it. It doesn't strike me as being particularly exciting initially, but it really grows on me the more I try to dissect it intellectually. Delicate and pure compared to its regional peers and slightly smoky. The more air it gets the more it grows into something almost Burgundian, but with more dark fruited richness. Blackberries, blueberries, some wild raspberry. Even a hint of very ripe, almost stewed nectarine! Complex and with persistence given its price. Thoroughly enjoyable but at the same time serious and thought provoking. 63/100
