Yeah, sub-zero temps last night and the next three nights. This is a real drag. Although it looks like we are just barely going to miss the snow.

I have already shipped the '00 Baron to DC so that it will be well rested for the convention.

I guess I should be happy that it is a balmy 21F here.

You have our wines correct, David.

Howard, if you sent them to FedEx for holding have you coordinated with Tom or Jay for pickup? I think this is Tom's last week working in DC before he's off on another project.

Sure Howard, but where are they now if you've already sent them to DC? Sitting at the DC FedEx store or with friends here in DC or ???

Received a check from Rob and Susan.

Two more signed up - Barb and Bob Hudson - friends in Baltimore who were at the last DC BWE event. We are up to 31 now.

Meanwhile, woke up to 5 degrees and windy this morning. Stopped by the Dunkin Donuts drive-through to bring the staff a treat and found my car window was frozen shut.

It's gotta be better by BWE weekend, doesn't it?

The convention is shaping up nicely.
Not too late to sign up for any of you stragglers!
I mean, 89 Lynch v. '89 Baron, it does not get much better than that.
And the people who are gonna be there... not the pretentious know it alls we see and read about at other events, not all the BS from those trying to prove how much they know, etc. Just true friends and wine lovers with great food in a great town.

David, I'm ok with my offer for the blind tasting, but limited space in my lugage, and what I bring to the US, we have to drink as it makes no sense to bring it back here, i want to limit the carry on bottles to 3 (i'll source one or two other bottles locally).

Originally, I plan to bring 3 bottles. that could be the 2 bottles you identified I could bring for the blind tasting and another one, or 2 bottles of the 1989 Château La Fleur de Gay, and 1 bottle for the blind tasting.

Please let me know what you prefer (other BWE too).

Nic, if you bring the 2000 Calon and Poyferre I guarantee that we will use them for the blind tasting. You won't have to take them back home. Of course, if you win the blind tasting, you'll be able to take a whole case home in your new Wine Check. :D

Steve and Jeanne have Leoville Poyferre in a bunch of vintages, and have offered to bring a 1989 to add to that theme, and a 2000 as backup for the blind tasting in case one of the other bottles is corked.

Oh good, I was hoping something like that Howard.

A little more grist for the 2000 v. 2002 mill, here are Jancis Robinson's vintage generalizations:

2002 Smallish crop dogged by an uneven flowering and a grey, humid summer which meant uneven ripeness in far-from-uniformly healthy grapes. Growers concentrated on the rescue effect of pretty fine weather from 9 Sep. The wines are correct and, in a 21st-century context, are not expensive, but they may not last all that long.

2000 Nature's benevolence coincided with the commercial imperative to have a good vintage in this numerically exceptional year. Great consistency and balance. The petits châteaux represented some of Bordeaux’s best value for many years though most are ready to drink or even starting to decline. The best wines should last well into their second or even third decades.

I do not expect an upset, but I think it will be close. Most interesting will be to see if we collectively can determine the vintage of the wines when they are served blind. I am tempted to "cheat" by going into training these next two months 'cause I could use another wine carrier. Not that I expect that training would do more than move me up to the 50 percentile in the blind tasting.

As I wrote before, I'll have limited room in my lugage so would be happy If some one could replace my 2000 Calon Ségur or Léoville Poyferré for the blind tasting, I will bring the other.

If no one can, is any one in DC can pick at bottle of the 2000 Léoville Poyferré at Calvert Woodley (200$) and I'll pay him back, and bring my 2000 Calon Ségur.

Let me know.

Léoville Poyferré and Calon Ségur. So If you have too much money Jim, you should bet 20$ on the 2002 (eyes roll)...

The blind tasting wines are:
2000 vs. 2002 Calon Segur
2000 vs. 2002 Leoville Poyferre
2000 vs. 2002 Pichon Baron

Below is a copy of the lineup and who's bringing what from the prior page. Two bottles of each wine with a backup in case of TCA or otherwise flawed bottle.
We are still looking for:
One more bottle of 2002 Calon Segur as a backup in case of a bad bottle.
One more bottle of 2002 Leoville Poyferre as a backup in case of a bad bottle.
Nic has asked for one more bottle of 2000 Calon Segur or 2000 Leoville Poyferre as he can't bring both. If Chris doesn't have a Calon, I have a Poyferre, but then we will be short a backup bottle.

Calon Segur - St. Estephe
2000 - 3 bottles on offer
SCWine (1)
Stefan (1)
Nic (1)
2002 - 2 bottles on offer
SCWine (1)
Stefan (1)

Leoville Poyferre - St. Julien
2000 - 2 bottles on offer
DavidG (1) + 1 if needed
Nic (1)
2002 - 2 bottles on offer
JAL (1)
Stefan (1)

Pichon Baron - Pauillac
2000 - 2 bottles on offer
DavidG (1) + 1 if needed
HM$ (1)
2002 - 3 bottles on offer
JimHow (3)

For each of the above, we have at least 2 bottles of each wine on offer. Would like to see another bottle of 2002 Calon Segur and 2002 Leoville Poyferre on deck in case of a corked bottle. I can bring a back-up for the 2000 Poyferre and 2000 Baron in case of taint.

But will bring 89 PB and 89 LB to make sure there's enough for the comparison.

As noted by Mr. Vino in the Friday dinner thread, we are getting close to the time when reservations have to be cut off. Mr. Vino has a couple more people who might be interested. For them and anyone else who is interested, it's time to speak up. I'm holding 2 spots for Mr. Vino's friends. There is the potential to fit 5 more, but I may not be able to get extra glassware for the latecomers. I don't plan on reducing the 8 stems/person initially promised, so the latecomers may have to share. If I haven't heard from you and received a check by Thursday, it will be too late.

For those who have signed up, I think we are going to have a blast!
