All,

I need to get a couple of things clarified with the venue but we have a verbal agreement. I'll post full info within a couple of weeks but go ahead and post interest so I can begin to get a count.

Our dinner will be held at the famous Bistro Francais in the heart of historic Georgetown. I will be meeting the GM to begin to finalize the menu which will be 3 courses. We will have their private dining room for the evening. Once I get the details settled, I will begin accepting payments. Price will be "all in" and I hope to be able to offer some "extras". Please let me know If you will be able to attend so I can begin to get a count.

There's lots of shopping opportunities and the famous Blues Alley jazz club is right around the corner. You are also a block away from the waterfront so easy to spend the day or the afternoon in Georgetown before the dinner.

I think the theme for Friday night should be 14% and higher wines and the theme for Saturday night should be 13.5% and lower.

Don't you think that's a bit discriminatory? Wines with 13.75% alcohol are excluded from both events?

You know, Jim, the buzz aspect of drinking more than half a bottle aside, it isn't always that easy to tell the difference between a 13% and a 14% alcohol wine just by drinking a glass or tasting. You can pick ringers on either side. That could be a theme for a blind tasting...

...except that the stated alcohol level on the label only has to be accurate within 1% (or is it 1.5%?). And some wineries fudge on the low end to reduce their tax liability. So you can't be sure of what's in the bottle. I promise not to bring any 14% 1945 DRC RC mise en bouteilles par Rudy.

Hmmm a blind tasting that attempts to identify the alcohol levels listed on the labels might be fun.

When I was getting started, I understood that it was +/- 1.5%, so that 12.5% on the label meant "somewhere between 11% and 14%". Above 14% meant more tax had to be paid, so everybody put "12.5%" on the label every year.

Very nice lunch. We had a nice chat with Pon, the gracious long time GM, who is giving us complete flexibility. I need to finalize the pricing with her, the glass rental charge and a couple of other things so it may be 10 days or so until I can start accepting payments but I will work on details this week and next. I think this will be a terrific venue for us!

Do we need a vegetarian option?

I have a call in for menu pricing and I will be pursuing this next week. At this point, we will have a soup, entree, cheese and dessert course. Please let me know if you will attend!

Happy New Year!

Jay, Please count me in. One place for now.

I finalize my passport renewal on January 3rd, so I will be there.

I'll send money to DavidG next weekend, for Saturday night.

I'll be happy to go back to my "second home", Washington DC, for a fourth time...

Here is the proposed menu. Let me know what you think. Price will be $120 per person inclusive. We'll start at 7PM. I plan to offer champagne with the passed hors d’oeuvres. There is probably some flexibility with the cheeses and I may be able to include another type. I will be renting stemware 2 maybe 3 stems per person. We're at 16 now and I would like at least 25 to be able to offer all the extra goodies. Given the room, I think 30 is the max.

Start : Pass hors d’oeuvres 1) seafood terrine (cold) 2) Quiche (warm) 3) Pissaladiere (warm)

First course : French onion soup

Second course: Choice of Entree

Duck confit and French fries
Beef tenderloin with black pepper sauce and French fries
Fresh Norwegian salmon with Beurre blanc & spinach mousse
Vegetable platter

Third course: Cheese
Brie or Explorateur, Bonne – Bouche ( Goat’s cheese from Vermont), Fourme d’Ambert (Blue)

Fourth course: Choice of chocolate mousse or crème caramel

Coffee/Tea

Updated. Ed, will your bride be able to join us? I think I'll pm everyone with payment address. If anyone wants to use paypal, I can accept it just add the fee 3% I believe. Let me know via pm and I will supply my paypal email. Anyone else joining us? I'll probably need to give the guarantee a week or so before the dinner so let's say March 21st is the cutoff date.

Marvellous Jay. I will finally have a guest, so he'll attend the Friday dinner as well.

Can we bring our wines, or buy to the restaurant?

Thanks for setting this.

Nic.

Done Nic. I would not advise choosing off the restaurant's list but I will be glad to pick up wines for you and anyone else at a retailer in the DC area. Some internet retailers will ship to me in MD. Fedex is preferred as I can have them sent to a Fedex store near my house. I do ask that if you need me to pick up wines, please purchase them no later than a couple of weeks before the dinner to give me time to get them.

I will be pming everyone with my mailing address. If you already have it, please send a check for $120 per person at your convenience. We can take a maximum of 30 thirsty winos and we are at 17 confirmed now.
