What are the 15 best wine bottles you drank

Post by Nicklasss »

As the BWE convention weekend is coming, I thought that would be a good subject. You never know which bottles can/will show up during that weekend... I'm awared that we did not sample all the same wines, and it dépends in which mood/circumstance/company you had the wine and that it might change depending what you remember.

1. 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild
2. 1982 Château Lafleur
3. 1990 Château la Conseillante
4. 1990 Château Pichon Baron Longueville
5. 1982 Château Pichon Lalande
6. 1983 Château Palmer
7. 1970 Château Latour
8. 1989 Montrachet Bouchard Père et Fils
9. 1989 Château Lynch Bages
10. 1999 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Fontenys Domaine Leroy
11. 1982 Château Margaux
12. 1982 Petrus
13. 1985 Château Margaux
14. 1989 Château Pichon Baron
15. 1990 Château Haut Bailly (two bottles for the first convention in Chicago, in 2001).
16. The bonus, 2001 Romanée St-Vivant from Hudelot-Noellat.

David....i don't remember whether we drank the LaLa's in NY at the Rhone tasting during the NY convention, but those are some of my favorite wines. i'm surprised that only one bottle of Cote Rotie appears on all lists...they can be magical when they are stored in a cool environment...I would certainly have more California wines on my list....especially the Mondavi Reserve and Phelps Insignia....one of the best Cabs i've tasted...2008 Alpha Omega BeckstofferTo-Kalon....epitomizes the magic of Napa fruit....Not sure if i'd have Bordeaux represent 80% of the best wines i've ever consumed...

Indeed, Emil, except that I have almost all Bordeaux on my list because I am... drum roll... a Bordeaux Wine Enthusiast....

Emil - there are probably a half-dozen California wines I could add to my list, but I'm just thinking Bordeaux tonight.

I'm sure I have forgotten some, and this is not in order of preference, but here goes:
1. 1982 Pichon Lalande
2. 1983 Palmer
3. 1949 Figeac
4. 1982 Margaux
5. 1982 Mouton
6. 1991 Dominus
7. 1990 Troplong Mondot
8. 1990 Yquem
9. 1988 Yquem
10.1982 Gruaud Larose
11. 1982 Haut Brion
12. 1986 Leoville Barton
13. 1982 Cos d'Estournel
14. 1982 Leoville Las Cases
15. 1989 Lynch Bages

Others that were probably close to making - or perhaps should have made - my list, would include 1989 and 1990 Pichon Baron, 1989 Pichon Lalande, 1997 Montelena Estate Cab, 2000 Leoville Poyferre, 1990 Leoville Barton, 1986 Gruaud Larose, 1985 Haut Brion.
I'm sure I'll think of more later that were better than some of the 15 on my list and I'll kick myself.

I like the "top of the head" idea because if it doesn't immediately come to mind, maybe it wasn't that great, just fantastic.
In no particular order:

1. 1953 Margaux (the wine that changed my life; I couldn't believe wine could taste that good; drunk about 1978)
2. 1961 Petrus
3. 1988 Krug Clos du Mesnil
4. 1947 Che
5. 1959 Mouton
6. 1947 Cheval Blanc
7. 1959 Haut-Brion
8. 1961 Latour
9. 1971 Romanee-Conti
10. 1996 Coche-Dury Corton Charlemagne
11.1982 Petrus
12. 1982 Lafleur
12. 1961 Palmer
13. 1982 Mouton
14. 1967 Yquem
15. 1989 Haut-Brion Blanc

Yes, I have been blessed. But many of these I tasted a long time ago and probably would't be very good today. But I still have a bottle left of 8 of them . . .
