the quick over quick Saturday night

Post by Nicklasss »

wines, like you never thought it could be. A super convention, like always, but my prayers and kisses are going to the people in attendance first.

I like you, you're too cool, eternal. How can that be.

The wines, well, go figure out if you can be sad :

2002 Léoville Poyferré
2002 Pichon Baron
2002 Calon Segur
2000 Léoville Poyferré
2000 Pichon Baron
2000 Calon Segur
1989 Lynch Bages
1989 Pichon Baron
1989 Léoville Las cases
1966 Gruaud Larose (so pristine, so good).
2000 Beauséjour-Duffau (waht every St-Emilion should be).
1979 Pichon Lalande : amazing.
1990 Pichon Baron (amazing ++)
1986 Pichon Lalande (so <good but so young).
2000 Smith Haut Laffite (you need that Bobby, smoky)
2004 Smith Haut Laffite (when's everything's going well)
1975 Gruaud Larose
1982 Talbot
1985 Gruaud Larose
1986Gruaud Larose
1989 Fleur de Gay (what to not like).
1995 Pichon Baron (promising, )
1986 L'Évangile (aaaahhhhh, Pomerol)
2000 Monbousquet
1996 Sociando-Mallet
2007 Pontet Canet (this is the last glass I drank, very good)
1961 Canon La Gaffeliere (good, decent, still very there)
2001 Lo Givot Priorat (thank you HM$, this is a super Spanish, like you're the only one to know).
2003 Rieussec (ouch, my sweet toot).
2002 Yquem (ouch, my head is spinning).

there was more, but geez, I could not have more.

super night, super people, when the next time?

And yes, right now, that 2007 Pontet Canet is still good.

Can you imagine that the 1989 Lynch Bages won again?

Nic, do you know which numbers the six blind wines had?

For my taste the 89 Lynch Bages was decidedly better than the 89 Pichon Baron. In previous tastings I always thought it was very close.

Thought the '89 Lynch Bages was decidedly better last night - loved the palate of leather, tobacco, and barnyard. Classic Lynch Bages!

I have never tasted the 89 LB and I have never been floored by the 89 PB so I knew LB had a good chance to edge it out

We had a beautiful 1998 Trotanoy and 1998 Clinet on Thursday night.

Jim, how did the 1998 Clinet show? We had a bottle recently and it was tasty but very primary and did not budge a bit over 2 hours.

I am not Jim but sat across from him and both of us thought it was excellent especially with the lamb.
Bear in mind we had also had 1978 Pichon Lalande / 1979 Palmer / 1983 Ausone. Not even mentioning the mystery wines.
Also since a large group and tasting a lot of smaller pours it is hard to observer a wine's evolution.

It was a pleasant surprise Carlos, I was pouring a glass just as the lamb was being served and, as Rob said, it was a great match. The '98 Trotanoy was a beauty as well.

I have not touched my 98 Trotanoy. Does it need another decade of sleep?

Both Pomerols were everything you'd expect from a 1998 right banker Glenn, rich and bold with a long way to go.
With food, though, they both really shined now for me. But yes you can certainly holding for another decade. 1998R is an epic vintage.

The 1998 Trot and Clinet both went great with the lamb on Thursday. I preferred the Trot but the Clinet was also outstanding. Neither one was mature. They were drinking well, but not showing true aged tertiary development. I would say that will come in another 10 years.
