Is 2010 the greatest Bordeaux vintage ever?

Post by JimHow »

From what I can tell from early returns of key precincts, the answer is yes.

I'm pretty sure it is a glorious vintage. But the greatest ever?

I need someone that would to make my try some 1900, 1928, 1945, 1961, 1982, 1996, next to the 2010 to figure out.

I regret stating the obvious but we won't know until 40 or 50 years from now...

Finally took the plunge and purchased 6 bottles of the 2010 Cantemerle. Also took a chance with 2010 Lalande Borie. At $27 shipped from B-21 it seems like a low risk proposition. Planning adding about a dozen names from this vintage to the cellar and appreciate your notes. Where would you say was the sweet spot for 2010 Bordeaux as far as region?

I've only had about ten 2010s so far, brodway, but so far for me each one of them has been consistently great.

kind of hard to justify spending $70 for a wine that needs 20 years to deliver but I won't spoil the party-Buy BD Buy!!

Wow!

I'm loading up, I'm sold. I think this vintage has something for everyone. From what I can see, it has a lot if the characteristics that I look for in Bordeaux.

Unlike before, the successive vintages of 2009 and 2010 are the best things that happened to Bdx. These vintages are stylistically different, and there is something for everyone depending on what one is looking for. Hence, it's my conclusion that the combined vintages of 09 and 10 should be pronounced "Vintage of the Century"... :P

IMO, no. I prefer 2009 for its style. Having tasted hundreds of 2009 and 2010 Bordeaux multiple times, there are some wines in 2010 that are better than 2009. But across the board, in all appellations at every price point, I'd give the nod to 2009. As the wines mature, the differences will become more apparent. Both vintages are about as good as it gets, so either way, tasters should be happy.

As Jeff acknowledges, I think it's a matter of style/taste preference. Personally I have a slight preference overall for 2009 as well, but both vintages are qualitatively phenomenal, as is 2005 which has become slightly underappreciated in all the (well-deserved) attention paid to '09 and '10 (St. Emilion was overall stronger in '05 than '09/'10, as was arguably Margaux). Given your palate, Jim, I can see why you might prefer 2010. But there are incredible wines from all three vintages for all palates at all price points. I've bought heavily in all three vintages which will comprise a big part of my cellar as I get older.

Yup, 2010 is a JimHow kind of year. More acidity and "crunchy fruit" compared to 2009, which is a lusher and riper year.

The 2025 Annual BWE Convention in DC will feature a 2009 vs. 2010 blind tasting. Mark your calendars now!

Sounds like 2010 is the best for an old Medoc man like me.
David, I'll notify internationally renowned lawyer and philanthropist Jimmy "Lynch 'The New Lafite' Bages" How of the 2025 blind tasting.
