Help with Tasting Ideas

Post by Carlos Delpin »

Soon I will have to declare the topic for my turn at hosting our Bordeaux tasting group event. Most of the tastings are always verticals, horizontals, or commune reviews. I like to do things a bit differently and would like the help of the group in developing off kilter tasting themes. In the past I've hosted the following blind tastings.

1. First growth versus second wine
2. Family feuds (vineyards that are a result of family disputes or divisions)
3. Border battles (vineyards that share a border)

Ideas? Thanks for playing.

How about wines from years divisible by five?

Actually I think 2 (Family Feuds) and 3 (Border Disputes) are very good ideas. Also could do St. Julien versus Pauillac or Pomerol versus St, Emilion.

But what about Bordeaux versus Pretenders (Cabs, Merlots, Cab Francs and Bordeaux style blends from other parts of the world)?

Another idea might me the different whites of Bordeaux.

Or maybe garagistes versus traditionalist of St Emilion.

How about change in winemaker (or consultant)/change in style?
Or same winemaker (or consultant)/different property? Wines pre/post Michel Rolland/Stephan Derenencourt/etc.?
Or pre/post biodynamic/organic/other significant(?) change in vineyard practices?

Instead of 1st vs 2nd, why not a horizontal of 2nd wines: Carruades, Les Forts, Bahans, Chapelle d'Ausone, etc....
Best

I like your attitude, Carlos, you definitely seem to have the BWE spirit.
