OWC stacking height?

Post by Michael-P »

Now that my cellar is functional.....

How many 12x750ml OWCs would you stack high?
I seem to recall Tom in DC had them around 6 feet high. Is that 7 or 8 OWCs?

Thanks!

8 for me, although that's not 6 feet.
I've been in Tom's cellar.
He stacks them higher.

I put no more than 6, since I feel opened OWCs are less sturdy compared to unopened ones...

But came across this, but seems expensive. Not sure, how many bins you get for the list price of 99 bucks...Anyone tried these?

I recommend stacking them into bookcases built to hold wooden wine cases. Suppose you want a case that is at the bottom of the stack of 8? Bookcases designed to hold wine are relatively cheap to have made (and can be self constructed if you are just slightly more handy than I) and save problems down the road. You lose a bit of space per case on the one hand, but in a bookcase you can stack all the way to the ceiling if you want, putting at the top the cases that you want to age more quickly because your temperature will be slightly higher there.

Like Stefan said. As soon as you stack, you'll want one at the bottom.

I prefer it that way, to save me from myself.

It's inevitable that the bottle you want is at the bottom of the stack.

With a ceiling height of 6'10" or so, our stacks are ten cases high, sometimes with room for a flat six pack box on top of that. To get everything off the floor, the stacks are on top of a 3/4" plywood platform attached to treated 2x4's laid flat.

I've long had plans to build shelving for the "big pile o' wine" but haven't gotten around to it, probably because I don't want to lose the capacity. But I am starting to worry about working overhead to pull cases down from the top of the stacks...

Chateau Vin,

I broke down and bought a bunch of these Eurocave rollout shelves several years ago and while they are quite functional, I have not purchased more due to the cost as I would rather put that $$$ towards more wine. Each $99.95 package comes with 2 roll out shelves.

Thanks jckba...

They seem to be very functional, but 4 or 5 roll out shelves would be more apt for 100 bucks... Are they not offered on Home Shopping Network that doubles the order for the same price?

I did the main move yesterday. Stacked them 10 high and they seem sturdy.
I tried my best to get the younger wines on the bottom but its not perfect.

Those drawers look cool but pricey.

It is inevitable that you will want to taste something in the bottom case down the road. I have a couple of stacks of six where I could not put in shelving and salivate every time I read what is in the bottom cases. I used to rely on Lucie to get bottles from the lower cases, but after turning 70 she refuses to do such work.

For what it's worth, Wine Enthusiast is running a special this Columbus Day weekend when you spend $50 and use code 50for50, you get $50 off towards a future purchase. Makes those EuroCave pull out shelves a little more tempting now doesn't it ;). There is however a limit of 1 offer per valid email address.
