2014 Bordeaux hit by hail

Post by DavidG »

A lot of damage. Sounds like many of the big names escaped the worst damage. I imagine the little guys are most vulnerable financially.

While devastating for yields, the quality of the 2014 vintage is not in danger. "We are in the flowering period, so there is no impact on the quality, only the quantity," said Pierre Graffeuille, commercial director for the Delon family estates, which includes cru Bourgeois Château Potensac and second-growth Château Léoville Las Cases. "The same thing for the 2015 vintage, when the weak wood will impact the quantity but not the quality."
Just what we need - another two vintages where they can justify price increases due to short supply...

Doesn't matter in terms of whether I'm buying, I'm not. But I'm still interested in what's happening in Bordeaux. So yes, it does matter.

Don't we hear a hail story just about every year in Bordeaux?

I'm currently in Beaune and can confirm that Chateau Pommard lost at least 50% of their potential harvest. Moving to Cote de Nuits tomorrow to visit Gevrey Chambertin and Nuits St. Georges, but the mood at the estates seems to have been brought down by difficult weather.

Report to follow once i get back from my trip. In the interim, i will throw a teaser and say i met up with an old time BWE member Tim in Paris and we shared a bottle of 1966 Margaux that he was generous enough to open over his lovely historic flat in the heart of the Marais.

Also visited Chateau du Meursault in Meursault and they too were terribly hit by the hail.
