The strange Pinot Noir...

Not so long ago, I opened a bottle of the 2011 Savigny-les-Beaune Vieilles Vignes, from Domaine Maréchal. While i was expecting something exçellent, this wine was a bad "let down". Very light, missing character, too simple...

Tonight, i opened another Pinot, from a producer I like, a winemaker originally from Québec, Pascal Marchand. A let down? His 2009 Bourgogne Avalon is a very nice wine for the price. Nice clear red color, with old pink rim. Nose is fragrant, with bitter red berries, raisins, flowers, light spices, old strawberries, a little touch of candy, very complex for a régional Bourgogne. In mouth, flavorful, with sweet rec berries, strawberries, some decent balanced oak, light brown sugar. Some poise, light tannins, good acids, decent length. Well, i would say this is just extremely good for the price. Very satisfying. Putting a TN is tricky, but I can't give less than 90-91 for that wine, that is just too good to be true!

Nic, I enjoyed the Vougeraie wines from Pascal Marchand. The Bourgogne sounds like a winner.

2009 is, in my experience, a very good vintage for buying simple Bourgogne. OTOH, I have not been enthralled by any 2011 red Burgundy.
