So what about 2010?

Post by Nicklasss »

Vintage generalization is unfair. So many things can in grape growing, winemaking, oak aging, influence and change the wine in different ways. Personal taste is also something very non precised.

Drinking Château Latour 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, and all other great growths, and détermine which is the best vintage is a really tough job.

But, I'm with AlexR and some others, that the truth is "clearer" when you taste the "regular" red Bordeaux in these vintages. These producers don't have the same ressources to produce their wines, and the vintage has way more impact on their wine.

So, tonight, I opened an inexpensive 2010 Château Terrasson, that you probably never heard of. This is from the AOC Côtes de Bordeaux, from the Côtes de Castillon area. 70% Merlot, 15% of each cabernet.the color is medium red. Nose is light to medium power, on the traditionnal red berries, Merlot light plummy cherries, light oak and spices. With that little something like sweet tobacco. In mouth, this is fair, well fruited, with good acid cherries, light vanilla, oak, more ripe pomegranate, light vegetals, good tannins, and a decent long red currant finish. Stay balanced. Very nice, that deserved a TN of 84. No greeness, no hard edge, full of Bordeaux character and very light austerity. To me, that wine shoes that 2010 is something special, not as intense as the little Bordeaux from 2005 that will hold for 10-12 years easily, or the lush 2009 small Bordeaux that are very good now but a bit low on acids. That 2010 is good now, but is like a mix of the two others, but with more acids.

This is a simple analysis, but this wine is also balanced, proof that it should hold for 7 years easily. So personnally, and If I include the 2000 vintage, with my limited experience, i would say that 2010 seems like my third favorite vintage since 2000, behind 2005 and 2000.

I've tasted a lot of Bordeaux vintages.
From what I can tell, 2010 is the greatest Bordeaux vintage ever.

I thought it was the 2002 that was your best since...

I guess that comparing many "best ever" Bordeaux vintages is like cutting a hair in 4!

Yes Mark until 2010 came along, I have had the 2002 left bank vintage as the greatest certainly at least in this century, if not since 1961. Likewise, when I talk about the greatness of 2010, I am referring to the left bank.

I would rank 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2009 all well ahead of 2002 in this decade alone. If you want to go back to 1961, I could name a lot more.

So my partner Maureen knows the person who runs one of the most famous estates in Bordeaux. Can't say who but it is a first growth. At my request she asked him 'which is better, 2005 or 2010?' He came back straight away with ' 2010. By far.'

No beating around the bush. No umming and erring. No qualifications. He came straight out with it.

Two thousand and ten is probably the greatest ever left bank vintage, and possibly - I would even say probably -the greatest ever vintage in Bordeaux.

We went to a Chateau Margaux vertical last year with Paul Pontallier. We didn't have the the 2005 in the line up but we did have the 0-nine and 0-ten. The ten was extraordinary and clearly better than the 2009. Pontallier was obviously very proud of his 2010 which had that bit of something extra special. It had more freshness and better balance than the 2009. It is the greatest young wine I have ever tasted.

At the Montrose tasting we did this year the 2010 was the best wine, and by a clear margin over the 2005 and 2003, which were equal second. The 2009 was fourth and the 2000 in fifth...although there were several other wines which were much more pleasant to drink than the 2000.

I just bought the last six bottles of 2010 Cantemerle from MacArthur's. I love this wine. You snooze you loose.

The BWE DC '14 blind tasting of 2000 vs 2002 featured only 3 wines from each year, so it's hardly definitive. But the 2000 versions of the Léoville Poyferre and Pichon Baron beat their 2002 counterparts and were the top vote-getters in the tasting. The Calon Segurs finished in 5th and 6th place, with the 2002 besting the 2000.

I'm not knocking 2010, I've heard lots of praise for it. I'm just not a fan of 2002.

Comte Flaneur,

Had Cheval Blanc 2010 and 2009 at the chateau during primeur this year with technical director of Cheval Blanc, Pierre Olivier Clouet. For my taste, 2010 edged 2009 because of more CF (Bouchet), which gave 2010 more concentration, depth and richness. But the difference was small.

I tasted Margaux 2009 and 2010 (barrel sample the latter) in September 2011. 2009 was a flamboyant wine full of class, while 2010 was a tad less intense than 2009. From your TNs it appears, that after bottling it gained concentration and richness, as many 2010s did.

2010 Montrose is a beast!
