My notes on 2019 Prum
This was a tasting to really check in on the Prums. We were not disappointed; the wines were superb with a few surprises.

Kabinett
The Graacher was slightly more complex than the Wehlener, which was more opulent. 93 and 92

Spatlese
The Graacher was superb with perhaps the longest finish of all. The best of the 2019s for one person, my joint second best.
The Wehlener again slightly lagging. Not quite the cut of the Graacher, but a lovely wine in its own right. 96 and 94

Auslese
The Graacher here had less minerality; but some lovely apple compote notes the Wehlener was better on the palate but marred by a strange cheesy nose.
94 and 93

Auslese GK
Two brilliant wines; the Graacher fresh with floral and white peaches. On its own spectacular, but paled next to an utterly complete and almost perfect Wehlener. It’s not the first time I have had the Wehlener; the others did not have the complexity, opulence and acidity this did. Hopefully this is the norm. 98+ and 96

Wehlener Spatlese 1990 badly corked
Wehlener Auslese 2001 big petrol nose; lots of underlying fruit. Long and easy. Intensely flavored. Delicious 97

What is a respectable price for the 2019 J.J. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese?

Well, it finally happened. I bid the minimum at an HDH auction and won. I had gotten careless in my bidding on the assumption that this could never happen lol. 6*1995 LaFleur Petrus at $200/bottle all in. Even their minimums are not really very minimum…

I had that wine about 10 years ago, and i was very impressed. Marcus, if you can, keep a bottle for me for the next time i'm in DC, in 2027 after covid is over and my 12 or 13 extra vaccine shots.

Thanks for the recommendation Jacques. Never tried it on vanilla ice cream, but will. Already tried molasse, maple syrup, thick balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, honey, Sauternes, all good on vanilla ice cream.

Kentucky bourbon isn't for the faint-hearted. It does go well with a burger though. I used to order a shot over ice at a local "gourmet" burger restaurant whenever my wife and I ate there. My wife hated the smell, even from across the table.

All kidding aside, I really like Basil Hayden's Whiskey, when a restaurant's wine list sucks, that is what I order with one ice cube.

Did someone say whisky/bourbon? Currently residing in the liquor cabinet:

Colonel Taylor Small Batch
Blantons
Whistle Pig 12 yr Rye
Lagavulin 16 yr
Macallan 18 yr
Highland Park 25 yr

Putting any of them on ice cream would ruin both. My favorite over ice cream? Pedro Ximenez.

Amaretto and apricot brandy are really good on ice cream as well.

If anyone has a passion for single malt, come visit in Denver! It's all K&L's fault, but I've accumulated a pretty big collection of the stuff they direct import from the independent bottlers in Scotland (Signatory, Old Particular, Old Malt Cask, etc) and these are invariably interesting, often unusual and always really tasty,

Very nice selection David. The Lagavulin 16, Mcallan 18 and Highland Park 25 are all great.

I don't buy a lot of bourbon/scotch/whisky as MC can stand it, and i don't have lot of friends that like the stuff.

And Patrick, I'll make an effort to go to your next pool party in Denver. Believe it of not, drinking scotch on a sunny afternoon is very cool. Makes you forget about the sunburns.

I just bought a bottle of the Nikka Coffey Gin. Perfect, like Nikka can do. I agree that the Japanese scotch (or whisky as i'm not sure it can be called scotch) are probably the "best near the original" ever made in alcohol world.

Never tried the Basil Hayden's, but some available here.

Had some Zin tonight at the annual lawyer party, I brought 2008 Ridge Geyserville, 2014 Olga Ruffault Picasses, 2017 Felsina Rancia, 2014 Clerc Milon, 2018 La Dame de Montrose, and 2017 St. Innocent Momtazi. The wines were gulped down quickly by the room of sharks, er... compassionate lawyers.

It's hard to say, Patrick, I've never seen my wines gulped down more quickly than tonight. I bring six bottles to the party every year, although we skipped last year. I did my little presentation to the group, I kind of accentuated the 2014 Clerc Milon and that seemed to disappear first, but they all went quick, and they showed pretty much as you would expect. One of my friends said she liked the Rancia best of them all, but overall it was just a nice evening of reverie, tinged with the poignancy of the times. But great wines cheer all of that up, at least for a brief time.

I once won a 4 pack at AMC a lifetime ago for maybe $200 all in, throwing some back with pappadoc at some hole in the wall. The ones we had were just great.

Another good auction night!

Decided I had to get in on the 2014 action, so...
-4 bottles of the 2014 Montrose

And for my favorite post-1990 vintage from this Château...
-6 bottles of the 1995 Sociando Mallet

And the beat goes on.

Good to see you embracing the end of the year. Apologies if I screwed up your plans and enabled. But that seems to be exactly what BWE is all about :)

What price were you able to snag those 2014 Montrose for?

The 2019 has only been reviewed by Jane Anson. She gave it a 98, but more importantly, it is still priced at primeur pricing, readily available at $140 a bottle. I just bought some magnums, it is priced so far below the 2018, and to a lesser extent 2020.

Well, that’s my reason for not touching Tequila for about 47 years.
I still feel queasy looking at a bottle of it.
