Looks like they sold out, too bad. I was there in person a couple weeks ago and grabbed a magnum of the 2016 tardive for 56+tax though.

2014 Conseillante
2014 Vieux Chateau Certan
1979 Pichon Lalande
2018 Calon Segur

Just too many good wines out there - really want to take the 2018 Calon for a spin before lifting a case. The alcohol of this vintage has scared me away but Rauzan Segla and Calon Segur really have me curious as it appears that some handled this vintage better than others.

I just went long on both the 2014s and got a 1979 Pichon as well (plus got to taste it twice recently). Still passing on the 2018 Calon though. I hear it's a great wine, but I can't fathom the 15% alcohol. I passed on my favorite QPR Capbern from their stable for this reason also. I'll be quite curious to hear your thoughts.

6*2019 Jadot Ursules (after some great experiences with the 2002 of this wine). $75/each, but I had a coupon with the retailer refunding me for some overpayments of tariffs so that took it down to $40/each.

Is that a BWE new record for the most cases of one wine bought in one shot?

Cash is trash; 2010 is a stellar vintage and Lopez de Heredia is a top producer in Rioja and while the Tondonia Reserva is a large production wine, over time, I think it will prove to be a worthwhile investment which will return a multiple. I have ample cooled storage space, I have time on my side and consignment sale proceeds to burn so this just seemed like the apropos thing to do.

Interesting purchase. Tempting to make a smaller one myself.

Mind if I ask what you paid per bottle?

Also whats the alcohol percentage on these bad boys? And how long do you usually like to age this bottling for?

These were selling for £150 in bond per case in the U.K. It is supposed to be the best ever vintage. I was tempted and if I was JC’s or Joel’s age I would have bought a case or two. But it is a v-e-r-y long term proposition. A multi decade ager.

Thanks. Interesting investment decision. Tondonia Reserva is not a wine investors typically buy. But if Rioja is (re)discovered by consumers, prices might skyrocket down the line. IMO Rioja is one of the most undervalued big and long lived red wines. I should drink more of it. If your storage cost is basically zero, I guess you have little risk of loss and the possibility of a large gain.

Agree with you on the both the long drinking window + the undervalued aspect in todays fine wine market and since I picked them up at the frontline Bowler wholesale price of $40 all-in, I like my odds as it really becomes a question of how long to wait in order to realize the gains I am looking for. I have a sense that once the 2010 is no longer the current vintage and when the retail outlets sell out at the current $45-$55 retail price there will be the first jump and then as it matures, folks will be more than willing to pay an up charge for the better vintage but will that be $100 or more, only time will tell. And for reference, I bought a case of the LdH Tondonia Reserva 2001 (another stellar vintage) for $25/btl wholesale from Polaner back in the day and those now sell for $100 when they come up for sale at Chambers some 9 years later so like I said, I like my odds.

I think this is going to prompt me to start a new thread called ‘wine investment ideas’ so any of us can propose a purchase and then debate it’s merits.

Nice pictures and interesting rationale jckba. I've noticed over the years that despite all the stated love of LdH on enthusiast boards, even when anointed AFWE get together, there is plenty of their wines left at the end of the night.

Doesn't matter whether tinto/blanco/rose, vineyard, aging.

======

I certainly can accept the 'cash is trash' logic though, and for some circumstances, it may make sense vs. conventional stores of value.

I really like this thought process. I've made similar "investments" like this over the years. Although still waiting to see how most play out. I'm still shocked by Ian's quote of 150gbp per case in bond. That is nuts. My current calculations put that at $15 a bottle. Although I have no idea how much it would take to get those over to the states and what the end cost would be. Thanks for the heads up on this wine.

I am pretty sure that Ian’s quoted case price was for a 6 btl lot in bond as when I change my Wine-Searcher parameters to the UK, that is what I see.

Also nibbled on some 2016 Canon which I actually much prefer to the more flamboyant 2015.

How much? If referring to Canon it was a 6x2016 Canon, but if "how much?" refers to what I paid for the case of 2010 Lynch Bages, it was a little over $1800 in a private deal.

Thd 89' Pichon Lalande is one of my favorite all-time wines. I've probably drunk through a case of it with only a couple left. It will be a dad day when it's gone.

I've been lucky enough to have it 3 times in the last year or so and every time has been wonderful. It was my WOTN out of a 21 Pichon Lalande vertical recently. The 85 narrowly beat it out in another great tasting. And it was an ever close second of the great 89 comparison at BWE 2021, only to a perfect bottle of the 89 Lynch.

Good bottles are actually getable for a "reasonable" price right now. Especially in comparison to the other 89's and other vintages of Pichon Lalande (like 1996 and 2000 that have gone bonkers). So I had to grab a few that made sense.
