From about a month ago, the 2009 was open for business with lovely aromas of dark, ripe, blackberry fruits, leather and tobacco that carried through on the silky, savory palate. 93 whereas the 2010 is still sporting its spearmint and oak cloak and really just needs more time. 91+

Thanks JC that’s helpful

Another 2009 that seems to be drinking well is Leoville Barton an epic wine in the making

The 2009 vintage is shaping up as the modern day 1982

We are low on white wine in Texas, so I stopped at Total Wine to see what they have and ran into a 15% off sale on Winery Direct products. I bought

3 2018 Belland Puligny-Montrachet Champs-Gain
1 2018 Belland Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot
4 2002 Lanson Noble Cuvee

Stefan, are the Winery Direct wines worth investigating? I've always been a bit suspicious that their markup on those wines is the way they make money.

Jon, what I bought today were at or near the lowest price in the USA. Many of the Winery Direct wines from our TW are familiar Bordeaux. I was not interested in them because I do not want any more red wine in Texas. I am not familiar with Belland, but the two I bought reviewed well. 2002 Lanson Noble is a good Champagne. I finished mine several years ago, but imagine that it is still fine. This Total Wine had it (as well as the Bellands) in cold storage.

Jim, I see that you are keeping busy when you are not in court.

When I got home with the white Burgundy and Champagne and Lucie saw the Lanson, she asked how many bottles they had. I responded, "eight". She said, "why didn't you buy them all?"

That's my gal!

Very well done indeed, Mr. Johnson, yes, I'm off to pick up my latest order.
Tied up this week with my "boy gangster" in court, I need to buy more wine to alleviate my PTSD from all these murder trials.

I did not know that buying wine was a cure to alleviate PTSD.

I think I also suffer PTSD, as i'm looking more and more to a cro-magnon lately with beard and long hairs. Buying more wine should help me too.

I got seduced into buying two bottles of 2018 Bruno Giacosa Barolo by this note from Susan Hulme MW - no I have never heard of her either - but I happen to think that the 2018 Barolo (and Barbaresco) vintage is very under-rated:

Susan Hulme MW writes, “The 2018 Bruno Giacosa Barolo is very rich and hedonistic, with ripe strawberries and rose hip and notes of incense, lilies and violets. It is a lovely nose, persistent, intense and enticing and on the palate it is like falling into a soft velvety bed of rose petals.”

Hulme continues, “It already has such beautiful harmony and poise. It has a lush, sensual texture of crushed velvet, and is full-bodied without feeling heavy. There are plenty of dense, savory tannins extending the very long finish, creating a combination of seductive charm and power.”

The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak

OMG, i'm jalous. I thought the 2020 Calon Segur is such a great young Calon, preferring it to 2000, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011... so much complexity, balance, clasic style, poise in the 2020.

This is what i thought about the 2020 :
The 2020 Chateau Calon Segur is young, but impressively gifted. Dark color, with a nose full of blackcurrants, integrated oak, cedar, lot of forrest floor, blackberries... with something spicy. Mouth is very balanced, fruity, but with lot of flesh, tannins, freshness, cedar, violet berries and flowers. Some ripe green something, tannic cherries, and a long ligth austere long fruity vegetal mineral finish. Very Calon. This is quite something, and surely a distinctive excellent to great Calon Segur. Prices are up, but this is a great showing, for those who appreciates classical Bordeaux, made in a controlled ripe way. Very drinkable. Tn : 95.

I did not open any 2016 or 2018 yet.

ONE bottle, David? Would you like a loan?

The bad news is that last year I spent more on wine than Lucie spent on her (pre-owned) BMW.

The good news is that this year Lucie does not need (or want) another car! And I am content to drive my hand-me-down from Lucie, a 1998 Toyota Camry, which might outlast me. Nevertheless, I resolve not to spend more on wine this year than our after tax income from Social Security.

I have learned that if you live frugally (as you must on a teacher's salary) and retire at age 78, you don't have to worry about going to The Poor House when you get old. (Take note, blanquito.)

Thanks Jim,
Credit goes to BWE for bringing Lilian Ladouys to my attention. The first three though, have been long-time favorites. When I say Labégorce, that includes the consolidated Labégorce-Zédé which I preferred over Labégorce back in the day.

Sorry, DavidK; that was a joke for the other David. I thought your post was by him.

However, seeing as you are well heeled, I would happily take a loan for some 09 Lalande if the interest rate is good.*
