With all of the positive press on the 2014 cru Beaujolais I picked up a case each of the 2014 Lapierre Morgan (from Grapes the Wine Company) and 2014 Coudert Clos de la Roilette (Wine Wise in Greenwich, CT), the latter at $13.99 a btl which translates to less than the 10 case price from Bowler :D

Well done. As I have said before, the 1988 is my greatest wine experience ever. We had the 2008 at Rob and Sue's house this past weekend in Charlotte, it was spectacular with the porterhouses. Tom brought a 1988 to my house last summer, it was likewise magical, but in a different way.

I bought six bottles of Gangloff Cote Rotie La Barbarine 2011

This is a scintillating wine with so much mineral complexity. One of the most enthralling cote Roties I have ever tried. Young sure but approachable.

It was the year that Mathilde Gangloff sadly died in her early 50s.

I've been on something of a buying freeze, due to my unemployed situation, which I just broke. Now back on it again. There was lots of bidding on the Burgundy but very little on the Bordeaux. Picked up some fun wines on this one, including some notables:

2006 Pavillon Blanc Ch Margaux, 45 Branaire Ducru, 28 Brane Cantenac, 50 Cantenac Brown, 47 Lafleur, 86 Latour, 99 Leoville Barton, 66 LLC, 66 Leoville Poyferre, 64 Pavie, 59 Pichon Baron, 82 Lynch, 59 Canon la Gaffeliere, 61 Figeac, a few others.

After reading your list, Tim, I am too embarrassed to say what I bought recently. I have tasted only a few of the ones you procured (99 Barton, 66 LP, 61 Figeac; maybe 82 LB and/or 86 Latour at a BWE function?).

What is your new job?

The downside of more mature is that there is higher risk of bad bottles.

I really should be shifting some of my Rhone purchasing to MacArthurs.

Can't think of a place with a deeper selection than them.

btw, if you like Charvin's CNDP, their two Cotes du Rhone level bottlings are also good.

Smaller production, not imported every year, but quite good.

My consumption of CdR is low relative to village level wines, but that's one I like.

As some of you have noticed the dollar has a had a bit of a selloff in the last week or two, and if that holds, those prices on 12's, 14's may end up looking quite attractive over time. The Bordelais are promising that they will rebalance the pricing for the 2015 vintage which they think has tilted too much toward the consumer in recent years.

Only recent purchases for me (all from MacArthurs) were:

Two more bottles of 2004 Pol Roger Rose - a big hit at the Friday Black Salt lunch
Two bottles of 2012 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Eiswein - another star of the Black Salt lunch
Two bottles of 2013 Ridge Geyserville

At MacArthur's last weekend I bought 10 02 Pichon Baron and 2 02 Cos d'Estournel. Also a mixed case that contained 2013 Ridge Geyserville, 2013 Ridge Lytton Springs, 2012 Cristom Mt. Jefferson PN, and some other random items plus a couple of white Burgs for drinking at lunch in DC (a 2010 Carillon Puligny 1er and a 2010 Niellon Chassgne 1er).

I bought a case of a Louis Remy Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Derrière La Grange 2002...I am going to drink a few of these. The other case is in storage. The 2001 was very exciting as an exquisite expression of Chambolle. I figured the 2002 would be ok given some time.

I also took out a case of Ch. Rouget (Pomerol) 2000. Although this gets excellent review on CT it is valued at £280 ib and I paid £270 ib all those years ago...talk about an unfashionable wine! May as well drink it - any thoughts?

I also took back a corked bottle of Chateau La Gaffeliere 1995 tonight to my local Sampler and replaced it with a bottle of Cantenac Brown 2004, which tastes delicious from a sample. Plus I bought a bottle of even more delicious Benjamin Le Roux Volnay 1er Cru Clos La Cave De Ducs 2008.

While I was sampling tonight I tried five other wines that showed very well:

Batailley 2000, 2003, 2005 - all were a bit rustic but the 2000 has developed an alluring chewiness with its bumptious tannins...the 2005 is the pick, but the other two are more ready
D'Armhaillac 2004, 2005 - both with elevated fruit and plenty of lead pencil and surprisingly ready to go

Yes, Arv, you picked up on the fact that MacArthurs has a great Rhone selection. I've been obsessing about getting a mixed selection of about 18 bottles in my cellar for some time now, and finally pulled the trigger.

Their main edge is that they somehow have producers who don't get brought in otherwise, and if so, only into DC.

Presumably that's a quirk of US importation/distribution rules, and their longtime Parker relationship.

It's especially noticeable in the smaller production, or fancy CdR wines.

Historically I only bought stuff from them that I could not source anywhere else, between shipping/distance/pricing, but comparatively K&L has about 10x the number of CA or BDX selections as Rhone.

PS: thanks for the tip on the Mourchon - K&L has been bringing that in too. I got some of the Charvin CdR, although a different vintage, a week ago although have not picked it up. I love the 2013 regular Charvin CdR though.

So after receiving Grand Vins email yesterday notifying me that the 2009 Pape Clement was upgraded to 100 points I quickly winesearcher-ed it and ended up finding a case available for $137.97/btl at PJ Wine and ordered it online. My confirmation email just came which makes me 1 happy PJ's customer ;)

LOL, checked out Winesearcher out of curiosity on the 09 Pape Clement and there were like ten different stores listing the Pape Clement in the $130-150 range and every single one was sold out. Parker's still got it! Even in his half-drunk 'Hedonists Gazette" notes apparently.

Looks like the price stabilized somewhere around $160-170 but perhaps it will go up a bit more.

John Gilman rates the wine at 83-85 points. But which is the OBJECTIVE TRUTH????

I haven't had the 2009 Pape Clement but I'm betting that Parker is right and Gilman is wrong. That property has been smoking. I have an unopened case of 1998 Pape Clement in the cellar….

Patrick I tried a glass of a Leoville -Barton 1990 on my way to the Leoville Lascases dinner last Friday. It was brilliant:

Spectacular is an adjective you rarely see alongside Leoville-Barton but this wine is the complete symbiosis of impeccable, restrained, traditional winemaking and an exuberant vintage. It has a fabulous nose of cedar, graphite, tobacco, herbs and spices leading into a refined palate with cassis-infused fruits, minerals and earth, underpinned by fine silky tannins and bright acidity. Perfectly pitched this wine has a restraint and equilibrium that the more exuberant Leoville-Lascases 1990 lacks. While both are thrilling the Barton is the better wine. It doesn't have a hair out of place.
