Re: So what have you bought lately?

My sister and her husband are visiting this weekend; stefanJr, T, and families next week, so I needed more bottles in LA. At auction I got

2 1998 Arlaud Gevrey "La Justice" Cuvee Unique
1 1998 Arlaud M-S-D "Aux Chezeaux Cuvee Unique" Reserve (whatever that is)
4 2004 Chevillon NSG Cailles
3 2003 Chevillon Pruliers

If we don't drink all the Chevilon, I'll be happy to take the remainers home as I am almost out of 03 and 04 Chevillon NSG. I haven't drunk these Arlaud's, but the price I paid for the lot, $103.04 including tax and buyer's fee, makes the risk small.

I'll have to procure a few more bottles of Champagne. I have enough red Burgundy and probably white Burgundy, but may need some more Bdx and maybe Italian to get us through the next three weeks. 2.5 bottles of Sauternes will probably be enough to satisfy stefanJr, Irena, and Judd for the long weekend.

That is a pretty good price for the three Arlaud stefan...as you say you can’t really go too far wrong

Apart from the stuff I bought at auction a couple of weeks ago, not documented on this thread...

6 bottles of 1985 Tig @£100 each
3 bottles of 1995 Tig @£60 each
8 bottles of 1983 Mouton Baronne Philippe @ £20 each...

I also recently purchased eight half bottles of 2004 Haut-Bailly for £29 each. The 2004 vintage was pivotal for Haut-Bailly.

I am angry at Haut-Bailly right now because of the wretched 2007 we drank a couple of weeks ago, but you got great deals on the others.

Do you remember whether 1983 was the last vintage that D'Armailhac was named Mouton-Baronne-Philippe?

2004 Haut Bailly was great, as was 2002 and 2006.

stefan, I was bordering on shocked at your note on the 2007 Haut-Bailly given how good the 2006 and 2008 are...notwithstanding 2007 being a difficult vintage, albeit not so much so as to prevent Haut Brion and LMHB from being utterly charming when we visited in 2015.

The last vintage of MBP was 1988...the first vintage of d’Armailhac was 1989.

Picked up a case of the recently released 2006 Lopez de Heredia Bosconia Reserva for $29.33/btl + tax, a no brainer purchase for me.

Funny when I was there two weeks ago I tried the Ch. La Tour de Mons, which shows promise to age gracefully, and the Ch. L'argenteyre which for the price was good weekday quaffer.

2x 2009 Moulin de Duhart - '09 is a good vintage for the second wine of Duhart Milon
4x 2012 Larose Trintaudon - I have the '09, '10, and '11 in my cellar as well. Usually at its best around 10-12 years after vintage.
1x 2015 Brane Cantenac - One of the best Margaux wines of the vintage, probably a tie for 3rd with Rauzan Segla, behind Margaux and Palmer.
3x 2015 Cantenac Brown - Another top rated wine in 2015 with a reasonable price-tag.
4x 2015 Cantemerle - So good! I have some 375s to keep me away from these
3x 2015 Guillou - a reliable, inexpensive Montagne St Emilion. This purchase fills out a case for me.
1x 2015 d'Arvigny - an inexpensive Haut Medoc that I buy some of in each vintage. I'll pop this one soon to get an idea of how much more to buy

Nice buy, Chris. The 2009 Moulin de Duhart is an absolutely fantastic wine, drinking beautifully now. This particular vintage of the moulin is one of my all-time favourite second wines (along with 09 Alter Ego) and I have had a stack of these over the past 3-4 years, almost out of my stock now :(
The Moulin is more forward than the GV, and a little less powerful, but certainly a better drink right now!!!

I was a little reluctant to buy it at the full retail of $56 at my local retailer, but he gave me 10% off on the first couple bottles and this time he took 15% off so it was pretty easy to justify. And after I drank the first one I definitely wanted more. Now I have 3 to drink over the next few years.
He also has the '09 DM but I can't spend $175 on a bottle of wine, even if he does drop it 15% for me, and I got a bottle of the 2010 for $108 at TW.
Although that might be one of the last bottles of Bordeaux I drink before I die.

Another bottle of 2015 Ch. de Chantegrive Cuvee Caroline.

NH is having an American 15% off wine sale and while I saw 3 bottles I really wanted I had to stretch to fill out the case.

- 3 2013 Spottswoode Estate cab $148.75 ea
- 3 2012 Newton unfiltered cab $29.75 ea

6 other summer qpr quaffers

Spottswoode has long been one of my favorite Cali cabs but the price has caught up to it. Newton has made a solid wine at a reasonable price since the late 80's and is one of my cellar defenders.

I was afraid of running out of wine in LA, so on May 24 I made one last purchase at K&L when I picked up some auction winnings:

2001 Coufran
2009 Pierre Mineral BdB
2003 Guiraud
2007 Billecart-Salmon
2009 Couspaude
Fallet-Dart "Clos du Mont" Brut

We'll return home with at most seven bottles.

We are looking forward to dining tomorrow with Ed & Lisa, who planned their trip to LA for a time when we could meet. We'll start with the Billecart-Salmon at our house and then walk to Joss, a fancy Chinese fusion restaurant around the corner from us. I brought from home a Burg that, IIRC, Ed liked a few years ago, plus a BWE favorite Bdx from 1986 that I won at a K&L auction.

Sunday we go back home, where I don't have to worry about having enough wine to drink. Beverly Hills is OK but too cold. The traffic is not bad where we are, but as soon as you venture out of the neighborhood it is horrendous.

Last week in NYC before heading to Tel Aviv:
1 bottle of 2011 Angerville Volnay 1er Cru
2 bottles of 2011 Angerville Volnay Champans
1 bottle of 2010 Courcel Pommard Clos des Epenots

We just drank our last two bottles of white wine in Israel; need to go shopping tomorrow

Snagged two bottles of 2004 Tertre Rotebouef at $95/each. Not a price I would have viewed as a bargain back in the day, but way below market price for a right banker of this quality.

They actually had a lot of it at that price but someone more liquid than me came in and bought it all a few days later. Below-market prices don't last long in the age of Winesearcher!

More BDX from Total Wine, yesterday:

3x 2009 Ch Talbot - Last bottles in the store. Since Mary will drink it, I'll buy it.
1x 2014 Ch Talbot - I have plenty for the future so I think this one will be opened in the next month or so.
1x 2014 La Croix Ducru Beaucaillou - completes the case purchase. This one went into the upstairs cooler for opening soon.
2x 2014 Ch. Potensac - must keep my hands off these. Potensac ages so well.
1x 2014 - Cos d'Estournel - now I have two.
1x 2014 La Dame de Montrose - can't afford Montrose.
1x 2015 Fourcas Dupre - daily drinker.

The sales clerk pointed out the 2000 Ch. La Cabanne, saying he just drank it recently and it was delicious. They have several bottles on the shelf. I think I'll put one on my shopping list for the next time I stop in.

I haven’t bought any 2017s (yet, maybe not at all) but the high prices concentrate the mind on how good is the previous vintage. So I bought a six pack of Clerc Milon 2016, three weeks ago, after being hugely impressed by it when I visited the estate.

Not sure if I already mentioned I snagged 8 halves of Haut Bailly 2004 for £29 a half. Lovely jubbly.

I may have to ask forgiveness from the BD as this is a Pinot purchase, and I know I’ll have to ask forgiveness when Peggy gets wind of it.

12 x 2014 Patricia Green Cellars Berserker's Cuvée Willamette Valley Pinot Noir @ $18/btl

I’ve been enjoying this for the past year. It’s turned me into a fan of OR Pinot Noir. It can stand tall with bottles costing 2-3 times as much and when I heard the winery still had a case available I couldn’t resist reloading.

I've been a Patricia Green Pinot fan since about the 2005 vintage. I have not purchased from every vintage, and I find that it drinks well enough when young that I have a hard time letting it age. However, I did get a case of the 2015 Freedom HIll, which will sleep quietly for a few more years because it is stored where it's not easy to get my hands on it.

I bought a case of 2005 Clos Du Marquis as noted on the 2005 thread and a case of halves of 2016 Cantemerle.

I bought a half bottle of Ch. Perheim 2012 to try tonight.

I also bought a case of 2015 Langhe Favorita, Fratelli Alessandria - bit of a discovery actually a nice drop for the summer, nice change from Chardonnay.
