Very nice selection Dandersson. I have to look how the Rhône performed in the 2017 vintage.

Nic, 2017 is supposed to be another great year in the North, following the 2015 and 2016. My strategy is to buy from producers that I know, I get anything from 2015-2017, that I can afford, sticking to my budget.

What I DIDN’T buy from yesterday’s HDH auction - 2 old Bordeaux, 1 Soldera, 1 White Burgundy, very good stuff but not trophies. I bid “only” 120-150% of the estimate. Most of them went for over 200%. Too many rich people at home with nothing to do but pay more for wine.

The high estimate was just the starting point in that auction. A shame as there were some nice things on offer, a case of 1990 La Lagune etc.

Interestingly 2016 Bordeaux was one of the few things that went for reasonable prices, probably because it is so obvious there is a ton on offer at retail.

I’ve bid at HDH auctions for years, my first HDH auction was in 2009, and through 12 years I’ve never won anything. I’ve never even come close to winning.

I tried 5 or 6 auctions here, never got anything. I quit. I never understand that some people pay some forytune for 1974 or 1987. Imagine what they're paying for 1982 or 1989... too many over rich people i guess.

I miss Wine Commune. If one stayed away from glamour bottles there were bargains to be had. I scored lots of Germans.

Same thing here. Last two auctions have been too expensive and I bought nothing. Weaker vintages also went for unrealistic prices despite lockdowns and supposed hard times. I just gave up.

This shows admirable self-control. The whole design of the HDH auction is to suck you in and trap you in to bidding -- you will never win anything by putting in a lowball bid and walking away (as your experience proves). They force you to actually bid and then that gets your juices going.

I ended up with a wine that I wasn't planning to buy in this auction just because it was somewhat below current retail prices (2012 Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle, an underrated Northern Rhone vintage, for $120 a bottle all in). I was fooled by current vintages being $160-180 a bottle, but then looked and saw that 2012 is available from at least one retailer at $135 so I didn't really save much at all. On the other hand I wanted to have a few more Northern Rhone in the cellar and 2012 is actually a good and underrated vintage. Now with this Hermitage I have like four cases total -- a half a case of Levet, a case of Jamet from 2009/2011, a few Guigal Ampuis, and some Clusel-Roch Grande Places and Rostaing from 2015 and 2016. It will all age forever.

3 bottles of the 2016 Lynch Bages, still on sale.

In 2 days, I increased my holdings of 2016 Bordeaux by 45%.

Agent Blanquito reporting... Adding today to my 7 bottles of 2016 Pichon Baron and 3 bottles of the 2016 Lynch Bages:

-2 bottles of 2016 Cos d’Estournel ($130 on sale)
-6 bottles of 2016 Giscours ($50 just the normal price at this shop)

These prices were just too keen to pass up and if I don’t like these down the road, I can flip ‘em.

All of their on sale 2016s have been cleaned out... no more baron, cos, lynch, giscours...

Patrick I was biting my lip; I didn’t want to say anything, but at least you have redeemed yourself. Lynch and Cos are also fabulous in 2016.by then Cos had come back from the dark side. A couple of observations:

1. You are under 50; therefore you are still a young man even though you are a BWE veteran
2. The reason why these are cheap is because there is a lot of Great Bordeaux wine around; if we were Burgundy Wine Enthusiasts it would be a different story. Great price on the Giscours. It is a modern day 1970. AVB has turned it round. It will last decades; a wine for the ages but is accessible now, which would not have been the case at the sane age with the 1970s.

William what you pay for you Lafon Rochets?

I feel like myself again! My COVID buying freeze was a drag. I wasn’t going to buy the Cos, but when I found out the last Lynch had just been sold, the shop keep mentioned that they were down to 2 Cos. I couldn’t resist.

But really, I blame you, Ian! I wouldn’t have bought the Giscours even at $50 but for having just read your notes on the 16 in the vertical. And your prior “best ever” remarks about the 16 Cos. And Stefan’s enduring wisdom about using the money refunded from the Bordeaux trip to buy Bordeaux wine. And Jim’s love for the vintage. Et cetera.

I just hope the 2016s don’t take 30 years to reach peak like the 95s and 96s are, or I’ll have to wait until I’m 75 to drink these!

I was hoping French wines or Cabernet wines or all wines would be available for 15% off in NH as I want to replenish my 2016 Bordeaux, they still have a lot in stock. But it was Italian wines in May and now California wines in June, damn it. I'm hoping France in July, what with Bastille Day, etc.

Tonight with grilled chicken while zooming with stefanJr and Irena, Lucie and I drank

2015 St Innocent Momtazi. The tannins are rougher in this wine than in the 2016 Justice we drank the other day, and the fruit is redder. It is a deep wine, with charcoal overtones in the fruit, and has excellent holding power.

In general, I think the 2015 St Innocent PNs will benefit more from aging that either the 2014 or 2016. The 2014 did dumb down a bit, but I think they are already reemerging. I'll have to drink one soon.

So the 2019 Clerc Milon came out at $70/btl and I was not thrilled so instead I picked up a case of the 1989 for $100/btl all in from our own Musigny 151 and I thank him for the slightly discounted BWE price and will thoroughly enjoy drinking each and every bottle.

2018 Bourgogne Aligoté from Chavy-Chouet
2019 Cone Valdemar rosado
Replaced my corked 2016 Chateau Bourgneuf by the same wine.

Good deal Patrick. I'm jealous!

I'm still looking for more Vins de Bourgogne in the coming weeks...

2 2013 Thierry & Pasquale Matrot Puligny Quintessence 1er Cru @ $50
2 2013 Vincent & Sophie Morey Chassagne Caillerets 1er Cru @ $50
2 2013 Thomas Morey Chassagne Macherelles 1er Cru @ $40

I don't recall drinking any wines from any of these producers even if I have drunk many Matrot and Morey white Burgundies.

Welcome back to the White Burgundy club, are these getting shipped to Texas?

As of now, no, Jacques. They will be held until I ask for shipping. It is easier to have them shipped to Oregon, but if we are still not traveling by November I'll probably have them shipped here. Of course, shipping them now is no good.

Nothing. Auctions are crazy. I put in a few reasonable bids and got nada. I checked on only one I lost. A bottle of 2010 Pichon Baron went for $243 including buyer's premium. It is available for retail at a WineSearcher top rated store in the same state at $195.
