Just grabbed a mixed case of a very favorite, classic estate of mine, Chateau Bel Air Marquis d’Aligre (quaintly referred to as BAMA):

6 x 2000 - the best vintage I’ve had of this wine
2 x 1995 - the most classic vintage
2 x 1996 - variable, but fire when on
2 x 1998

Awesome, hope you enjoy. Definitely serve cool. Not cold, but perhaps a few degrees cooler than your normal serving temperature for Bordeaux . The 2017 version of this bottling was superb. If you don’t like them, ship the rest down to me, I’ll buy at your sunk cost.

Definitely save half of the bottle to try over 2 or 3 days, Jimmy. I’ve enjoyed young Thivin on day 1, but the real fireworks have usually come on the second day.

12 x 2014 Olga Raffaukt Chinon Les Picasses

Splitting with Bobby Goulet.

Like Thivin, hard to imagine a better QPR. And some vintages, true vin du garde. The 89 and 90 are legendary. Trust me here, I have a long track record with this domaine, 2014 is that level.

Couldn’t agree anymore as I went deep with multi case purchases of both the 2014 with 7 cases and 2015 with 3 after tasting bottles of each as I essentially convinced myself that this was the rebirth of the 89 / 90 and that only a fool would not back up the truck at on release pricing.

By the way, getting together tonight with a bunch of Loire Valley aficionado’s from that ‘other board’ to partake in an epic Clos Rougeard versus Baudry Croix Boissee showdown.

Maybe that is changing. I am drinking a bottle of the Louis Michel Butteaux 2018 VV tonight with chicken soup, purchased from Fortnum & Mason next to my office before lockdown in early 2020. It is sweet, forward and voluptuous for a Louis Michel. I don’t dislike it. Objectively it is a lovely intense wine. But the change in style is quite abrupt. It has much more of the 2018 vintage signature than the Louis Michel signature. I have some of the 2017 Butteaux and Montmains in storage.

Since I last posted here I bought a fair bit in a 25% off sale from one of the U.K. supermarkets, a fair bit of cheaper stuff:

Six Dom de la Pousse d'Or Santenay Clos Tavannes 2013, £37 pb (I thought it was Volnay not Santenay ☹️)
Six La Louviere Blanc 2015, £18pb - this is great
Six Samuel Bilaud Chablis Grand Terroirs 2018, £16.50pb
Six Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs Champagne 2013, £25pb
Six Jacques Carillon Puligny Montrachet villages 2018, £45pb
Six Vina Tondonia Lopez Heredia Reserva 2008 (red), £22.50pb
Seven Tattinger Comtes de Champagne 2008, £112 pb
Three Vina Bosconia Lopez De Heredia Reserva 2009, £18 pb
Three Krug Grand Cuvee 168, £112 pb

At auction last week

Three Jaboulet HLC 1998 at £190 for three - want to see if my case of mags is worth keeping or not

Today

Another six pack of La Conseillante 2016, £900/6 ib same price as the release - this looks cheap on a number of criteria

We had a bottle of this at a tasting last month and it was absolutely singing. Light on its feet, but so much depth and complexity of fruit and spices muddled together with the perfect amount of age. My red of the night for sure. And top 2 wine of the night out of 18 wines. The other was a 1996 Bernard Morey Chassagne Caillerets. Highly recommend the Jaboulet and hope I get to taste again. I wonder if my 1983 is going to still be alive and kicking.

I predict the 2002 Malescot will outperform the 1998 Gruaud, you should uncork them side by side at dinner.

A nice turn back the clock kind of price on the ‘96 Ducru as whenever you can buy a stellar example of a wine with 25 years of age for approximately the same price as the current vintage, I’d say you are doing very well.
