I broke down and bought 2 bottles each of the 2013 Ridge Monte Bello Historic Vines and the Steep Terraces. The story is pretty interesting surrounding them. Supposedly they are the two oldest parcels of the vineyard and comprised the original Monte Bello releases of the 60's and 70's. Not cheap at $158 btl after member discount but these days it's within reason. They are available only to Ridge members at this point. The production was quite small at 150 and 225 cases.

A half case of Chateau La Conseillante 2011...so now I have the 2004, 08, 10, 11, 12 - I am pissed because the post-Brexit foreign buying mania robbed me of the opportunity to buy the 2006...(wine is an international commodity in numeraire currency)

2011 Ch. La Conseillante, Pomerol - £354 per 6 bottle case in bond

“The La Conseillante is a blend of 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc. It has a very well defined bouquet with attractive dark berry and mulberry aromas, the terroir really coming through with subtle notes of black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied and I think Jean-Michel has really achieved very the filigree tannins this year, rendering this the most feminine La Conseillante I have tasted. It is silky smooth and yet there is certainly a tensile structure that should see it age nicely over 15-20 years. It is very composed, almost understated towards the finish, but this shows great persistency in the mouth without being overpowering. A “controlled” La Conseillante” with just an elegant, beautiful finish.”
94-96/100 Neal Martin, Wine Advocate May 2012

“The quintessential elegant style of Pomerol, the 2011 La Conseillante offers copious aromas of raspberries, mulberries and spring flowers. Medium-bodied with pure fruit, seamlessly integrated tannin, acidity and wood, and a soft, velvety textured finish, this classic effort is ethereal in its elegance and precision. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.”
92/100 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #212 Apr 2014

“Good bright ruby. Deep, flinty aromas of blackberry, blueberry syrup, dark plum, violet and minerals. Lush, silky and sweet, with insidious vinosity keeping the lush blueberry and dark plum flavors fresh and delineated. Extremely suave wine with very refined tannins that spread out to cover the entire palate. Finishes very pure and very long, with crystalline lingering mineral and violet perfume. La Conseillante is always a sure bet but this top-notch effort in a difficult vintage like 2011 really deserves a round of applause.”
91+/100 Ian d’Agata, Vinous

I guess Thanksgiving is around the corner with stefan making his initial move about the season....You have been quiet lately as I see you don't partake in the political discussion and the other threads are slow lately due to the election....

Another nice score, Tim. You and The Donald make me want to move to Paris. Then I speak to my Parisian friends, who tell me that Le Pin may well win next time around.

It was a "bad" week at auction, I won most of my lowball bids:

1989 Magdelaine - 1 bottle
1989 Chasse Spleen - 1 bottle
1990 Leoville Barton - 1 bottle
1990 Louviere - 1 bottle
1990 La Dame de Montrose- 1 bottle
1995 Pavie Macquin - 5 bottles
1996 Pontet Canet - 1 bottle
1996 CVNE Imperial Rioja Gran Reserva - 1 bottle
2005 Clos Rene - 1 bottle
2012 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Shea - 3 bottles

Okay, with this 16 bottle haul, I've nearly reached a symbolic number in my cellar. Higher than I care to (readily) admit.

I... will... resist... that... number. I... will... not... go... above... it.

Couple of wine purchases over the last week: picked up a 6er of the 2014 Foillard Cote de Py for $29.99/per from Grapes and then while Bourbon hunting over the weekend I found 3 btls of 2006 Gaja's single vineyard Rennina Brunello at a turn back the clock price of $89.99/per.

Nice to know. I've not had thus particular bottling, but I'm a fan of this outfit in general (once the oak integrates).

2011 Calon Segur. Last one at Total Wine.
I asked the salesman to check stock in their W. Hartford store. He said they have no stock, and it's now a discontinued item.
To get the Mix 6 price I added:
2x Chateau Guibon Blanc
2x 2006 Chateau Garraud
1x 2011 Clos de la Vieille Eglise, Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux

Also, a case from Saratoga:
10x 2010 Chateau du Moulin Noir, Montagne St Emilion
1x 2008 Chateau Grand Mayne
1x 2009 Chateau Talbot

That finishes out a year of buying about 2 1/2 cases a month to build out my supply of cellar defenders.

I bought a case of 2010 Cantemerle just after Xmas. This was difficult as I purchased it in Dallas and arranged for the salesman to bring it with him when he visited his parents , who live nearby, for Xmas.

Good thing I got this wine as the BD had threaten to suspend me if I did not get a case before the end of the year.

That 2004 Leoville Barton is flat-out fantastic and I think its price will rise as people realize it. Been intending to post a thread specifically on that wine and 2004 in general.

Surprised to see you investing in the 2008 Conseillante after some of the stuff you said about the 2010 which you seemed kind of grudging about.

I got an auction case of 2005 Haut Bergey for $30 a bottle plus shipping -- I basically never buy case amounts but this is such a good daily drinker for the next decade that I couldn't resist. (Plus I'll admit I put in a lowball bid expecting to be outbid and wound up taking it).

Contrary to some things Jim said about it I think the 05 Haut Bergey has room to grow -- it has a very solid core of fruit and while it's great to drink now it is still in that stage of smoothed out primary fruit.

Good point and good question Marc.

Yes the 2004 Leoville-Barton is flat out gorgeous. So is the 2008; equally. I think the 2006, while more backward, can't quite match the ethereal quality of these two. The four and even the eight you can approach now. The six needs more time. The 00 and five need a lot more time. The ten is something else but I suspect it may have closed down. The point being is that the four is so good why not buy it and drink it rather than wait until Godot comes knocking when you can drink the 2005? The market is efficient I think and hence the small price differentials between the four and five. This leaves aside a discussion of the brilliant 2001 and 2002: but in the overall scheme of things the 2004 and 2008 take it to another level.

Which brings me on to La Conseillante. Same logic applies. The 2006 and 2008 vis a vis the 2010. I think the 2010 is one of the best ever made with the 1990 but it is clinical and the 2008 is a lot cheaper, and according to my reliable sources a brilliant wine like the 2006, the wine Jean-Michel Laporte was so proud of.

I purchased a case of the 2004 Leo B. a ways back and though I've had probably three or four bottles I'm surprised I apparently never posted a note on it. Frankly the only things I can recall about it was that it was good and substantial. Certainly it was a bargain in comparison to comparable, more recent releases (which are probably still somewhat of a bargain compared to its peer group).
