My father's 90th birthday party.

Post by JimHow »

Hard to believe. The relatives all coming in from out of state for tomorrow night's celebration.
He's very feeble now, can barely walk, but the mind is still pretty damned good.
Those old WWII vets, as tough as nails, can still kick the asses of my brothers and I.
I'm gonna pull out some of the good stuff, maybe some big bottles.

Have a good time Jim. An 9-0 is a big mark, bigger than any wine. Happy birthday to your dad, from your friend from Québec.

Thanks for the sentiments. He's a very sweet man, it was fun to celebrate his 90th with family and friends, some of whom we hadn't seen in a while. A lot of wine was consumed. The 1995 Cos d'Estournel was a favorite, as well as 2000 Lynch. The 3L of 2005 Potel Volnay disappeared very quickly. My 6L of 1994 Pontet Canet was very 1994. Good, not great, aging nicely but I don't see it improving. 2008 Lynch and 2008 Montrose were consumed very quickly. The Lynch was delicious, I didn't get to drink any of the Montrose. We had a champagne toast of 2002 Pol Roger. Numerous other Bordeauxs were uncorked, I kept going out to the car and pulling out more. Bordeaux can make a special occasion that much more memorable. The old man held up well. He's really had an amazing life, grew up on a farm in Lewiston, raised by Polish immigrants born in the 19th century, who arrived in Lewiston in the summer of 1914, just before the guns of August, President Wilson in office. Was working in a textile mill in Lewiston at age 19 in 1943 when he was drafted into the war, (one of four brothers who served in World War II, one of the brothers dying of tuberculosis at age 20, contracted while he was in the Army), soon landing in Casablanca, making his way through North Africa, departing from Algiers across the Meditaranean to Napoli, saw things that no 19 year old, or anyone for that matter, should see, eventually making his way to Rome for the liberation of the ancient city. Came back past the Statue of Liberty, met my mother, raised three boys, worked in the same textile mill for 40 years, never missed a day of work until he took the day off to go to the local courthouse to see his oldest son sworn in as a lawyer, never complained, always worked hard, never sought recognition for anything, a true American hero. Pictured here at last night's party. (That's my cousin John Krenicki on the left, the former CEO of GE Energy I'm always bragging about, recent chairman of Hess Oil, current chairman of Service Master, with a big private equity firm in NYC.). Good times!

Congratulations to your dad Jim... I don't think any of us could conceive what it would have been like to fight in the Second World War.

My late uncle who was also Polish was a spitfire pilot in the Battle of Britain in 1940.

BD:

Sounds like a wonderful and certainly a deserved celebration. Great so many family members could attend and it sounded like the group went through a lot of wine. 6L, 3L, wow! You guys did it right!

Great story, thanks for that.

Happy birthday to your father!

Thanks for the sentiments. His birthday is actually today, we had the big celebration on Saturday, tonight we'll have some cake and Chinese food.
He's a great man, very humble.

Michael-P is right - that's a BWE-worthy volume of wine.

Happy 90th birthday to your father, Jim.
