BWE France 15 Chateau visits

Hi All,

We are now going full force in the planning stages for BWE 15 in France. I will do a follow up posting with some of the logistical information in the next day or so.

But first, one question I would like to ask the participants: What Chateau are in your top three that you would want to visit?

Please EXCLUDE the following in your answer: Lafite, Latour, Margaux, Mouton, Haut Brion, Yquem, Cheval Blanc, Petrus, Pontet Canet, and Lynch Bages. We know that those are already in the "want" list. Basically, besides those, what other ones would you like to visit?

In addition, if you could only visit one first growth, what would it be?

Thanks!

How about some of the past Chateaux that produced WOTY for BWE (ignoring village Burgundy!)

For reminder, if I got these right, the BWE wines of the year:

2000: 1996 Sociando-Mallet
2001: 1989 Lynch-Bages
2002: 1995 d'Yquem
2003: 1999 Haut Brion Blanc
2004: 2000 Pichon Baron and 2000 du Tertre
2005: 2000 Margaux
2006: 2003 Pontet-Canet
2007: 2002 Leoville Poyferre
2008: 2005 Burgundy vintage (protest vote)
2009: 1989 Lafite Rothschild
2010: 2005 Cantemerle
2011: 2008 Leoville Poyferre
2012: 2009 Giscours
2013: 2004 Smith Haut Lafitte

Note, when we went to Bordeaux in 2005, we mentioned to Haut Brion that 99 HBB was our wine of the year, and they indeed did serve us that wine during the visit!

My only two requests are Lynch and Pontet Canet, otherwise I'll follow the crowd.
But, as Harry said, it might be good to hit one of our BWE wine of the year favorites, in the spirit of our common man roots.

So Leoville Poyferre is the only two time winner. Interesting.

As someone who will most likely not be able to make this trip (because of work), if there is enough interest, you cannot go wrong with a visit to Pontet Canet. I was privileged to attend a dinner in Chicago where they served several vintages from 2004 through 2010, with commentary from the owner. Both the 2009 and 2010 are stunning wines though different in style - a reflection of the vintage characteristics. And the Guy Tesseron is a pleasure to talk with about his wines.
