2014 BWE WINE OF THE YEAR: 2010 CHATEAU CHASSE SPLEEN

Post by JimHow »

The 2010 left bank vintage in Bordeaux is the greatest vintage ever.
The wines are high in alcohol but they are balanced by great structure, crunchiness, smooth, ripe tannins, and a classic style.
One of the great hallmarks of the vintage is the consistency and breadth of quality up and down the various price levels.
One great example of what the vintage has to offer is the 2010 Chateau Chasse Spleen.
It is a BWE kind of wine:
Classically styled. Drinking beautifully now but will age for 20+ years.
Deep, rich purple/ruby color. Beautiful finish. Earthy, black fruit, beautiful balance.
Available in the $35 range, a great bargain, especially when compared to wines of similar price levels in other parts of Bordeaux, California, and elsewhere.
A great wine from a great vintage at a very good price.
We welcome the 2010 Chasse Spleen into the pantheon of BWE Wines of the Year!

BWE Wines of the Year:

2000: 1996 Sociando-Mallet
2001: 1989 Lynch-Bages
2002: 1995 d'Yquem
2003: 1999 Haut Brion Blanc
2004: 2000 Pichon Baron and 2000 du Tertre
2005: 2000 Margaux
2006: 2003 Pontet-Canet
2007: 2002 Leoville Poyferre
2008: 2005 Burgundy vintage (protest vote)
2009: 1989 Lafite Rothschild
2010: 2005 Cantemerle
2011: 2008 Leoville Poyferre
2012: 2009 Giscours
2013: 2004 Smith Haut Lafitte
2014: 2010 Chasse Spleen

So it is written.
So it shall be done.

Congratulations to Chateau Chasse Spleen!

After all of the money that BWE'ers *didn't* lose due to the BD's ban (seriously, the longer we waited to buy 2010's, the lower the prices went!), the ban looks like sheer genius and picking a 2010 Bordeaux as the BWE wine of the year is a perfect counterpoint to the ban!

Congratulation to Château Chasse-Spleen, a wine I have appreciated, on many vintages (1986, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2009). Unfortunately, and i don't know why, the 2010 is not available here...

My résolution in 2015: explorate and open more Cru Bourgeois with excellent/great réputation.

PJs has it in stock for $35.97, they ship to most states.
I wanted to try 2010 Calon Segur and/or Rausan Segla but I just couldn't get down to NH this past month.
I briefly considered 2010 Maucaillou.
Thanks to those of you who made your recommendations!
I wanted to pick a wine that was affordable, that recognized an estate that has been showing consistent quality over a period of time, and that came from the great 2010 left bank vintage.
Interestingly, it is a wine with a high Merlot percentage, what is it, something like 55-45, Cabernet to merlot, in this great Cabernet vintage.

2010 Lilian-Ladouys is one of those runner ups worth checking out too. Excellent QPR, stunning wine.
