Without wishing to be accused of being obsequious that choice demonstrates the fathomless reservoir of sagacity of our Dear Leader. 2012 is good on the right bank and Rausan Segla is contender for wotv on the left. DDC is magnificent.

Last month I attended the Union Grand Cru Bordeaux tasting in San Francisco for the 2012 Bordeaux vintage. It was my third attendance and it was a stellar tasting, as always. It was just a two hour tasting window this time, but that was probably a good thing as I had more than my fair share before the 2 hours came to a close; I was glad I was getting the train home ;-).

I had heard that 2012 was stronger for the right bank wines, but frankly I didn't detect this myself at the tasting. I tried 53 wines across all appellations. In fact I tasted just about everything (if not everything) from St. Emilon, Pomerol, St. Julien, St. Estephe, Pauillac and Margaux. I missed a few from Graves and Pessac Leognan, and missed all the whites and sweet wines (I had to prioritize ;-)). I found the left bank wines to be just as wonderful.

Overall, the vintage struck me as eminently drinkable even now. Though the wines will show better with three or four years more of bottle age, they are already quite open and lovely. This was in pretty sharp contrast to '11 where I found some of the wines very closed. Particular cases in point would be Lynch Bages, Pichon Longville and Pichon Lalande - they were utterly closed in the '11 tasting last year - impenetrable bricks. However, these three wines were absolutely lovely to drink at the '12 tasting. My general feeling was the same across most of the wines.

My wine of the night was Haut Bailly - it was almost transfixing. In my notes I wrote down 'total everything...'.

Some other standouts for me from memory were:
Gazin - this was the first wine of the night (having tried about 20 by this time) that gave me shivers down my spine - lovely stuff.
Grand Puy Lacoste - this always strikes me as very good quality for the money, and this vintage was no exception.
Leoville Poyferre - more opulent and just downright tasty compared to any of the other St. Juliens
La Gaffeliere - I always prefer this to Canon la Gaffeliere - though I don't believe they are related, they are a few hundred meters from each other. This was very serious, perhaps more austere than others but I loved it.
Clos Fourtet - delicious

This vintage struck me as well worth investing in. I have 34 bottles so far on pre-arrival, but I may get more. Definitely a good way to enjoy some great Bordeaux at fair prices over the next few years while waiting for older or better vintages to come around.

Thanks for the report, Outlier, I'll have to reach over to the left bank as well.
He Who Shall Remain Nameless sure seems to like those right bankers.

Having actually tasted all those wines, these are the best choices from your list. Beausejour Duffau and Troplong Mondot are really strong in 2012.

Jim... Just use the search function for chateau, vintages, appellations or any combination. You can sort them as well. www.thewinecellarinsider.com/tasting-notes/
