TN: 1989 Sociando-Mallet

Post by Roel »

Château Sociando-Mallet Haut-Médoc CB 1989: This is tasty, classic and a tad rough Bordeaux! Full of life and enjoyment. Berry, plum, red peppers, cedar, licorice, wood, vanilla, tobacco and mocha. A little backward (poop de rustique) first, but some fresh air did wonders and brought more elegance and balance after 25 years of solitary confinement. Solid finish and remained on the same level the next few days. No hurry to drink this Sociando. 91-92 points

1989 is my favourite vintage of Sociando Mallet.

I remember we did a vertical in NYC. I think it was in 2006. I think Arv may have been there. Patrick too.

I think the wotn was the 1990 iirc, or was it the 1982 which was served en mag? My wotn was the 1989.

The 2000 and 2003 showed well that night, while the 1996 didn't quite get its act together for some reason.

The 1986 on the other hand was a hooligan. It had no manners. It was great.

Sociando is a wine you love or hate. I love it. Very unpredictable. Can be a charmer, fruity or full of bell pepper and poop. Or all together. Always with a long lifespan though. Not sure when to open the 2000, but will drink my last 1989 in a couple of years first.
