2012 du Tertre Ordered

Post by dstgolf »

After tasting the 2012 du Tertre I may have been premature to cut off my Bordeaux purchases at 2005 excep for lesser growths because of my age horizon and aging potential...me and the wine. The 12 du Tertre was so good that 2 cases were just orded today to enjoy through the rest of my days!!

Good move! générally speaking, I also liked most of the 2012 last week. Smith Haut-Lafitte and Léoville Las Cases being the top, but not so far were Pontet Canet and Du Tertre.

Nic,

When you look at QPR you can't beat what du Tertre is doing right now. Yes we tasted better or at least as good 2012's but at 5-10xs the cost!!What was said about Pontet Canet 10 yrs ago we may see the early stages at this Chateau happening before our eyes. Since at least 2000 they have produced a product well above their price. Suggest people watch and start buying in while the pricing stays down.

Danny, you look really good for being 75 years old! Don't buy the long agers if you don't want to leave anything behind, but the 09s, 12s, 06s are all generally good and I expect a short time till drinking window opens.

Very well done indeed!
I'm planning on a case myself, as well as Corbin.

Had to jump on it today. The 2012 futures ordering had been held over because of lack of response and today the offering closed so the timing couldn't have been better.

We just got back home two hours ago. Today is a holiday in the UK. I am ordering a case of Du Tertre 2012 and Pontet Canet 2011 tomorrow. I might even buy a case of LLC 2012, but that is a bigger outlay.

Here I can get the DuT for £195ib (i.e., ex-tax), the P-C for £540 and LLC for £940

My 2012 picks were mostly Pessac-Leognan that looked to be approachable young. Smith Haut Lafitte was one, also Pape Clement and Malartic Lagraviere. You guys are tempting me re: Pontet Canet and LLC, but I fear I'll be OTH before they're mature.

Fleur Cardinale? :-). The 97 JimHow points 2010 is still very reasonably priced.

I usually like du Terte, with the 1979, 1996 and 2000 being the real stand outs of what I've tried.

And I keep coming close to buying some 2010, but Parker's note keeps making me pause:
"...generous and ripe, the words 'sexy' and 'opulent' come to mind..."

I usually dislike wines Parker finds sexy and opulent.

So BWE, what is its style really like these days, from 2009-2010?

Blanquito,

Sexy and opulent maybe but not Parker over the top. Nothing to extremes here. I never heard a single negative comment from the group. The 2012 was fresh, crisp with nice dark berry fruit with balance exceeding its harsher brother Giscours. Don't think that you will be disappointed and this wine is currently fighting well above its weight class. Pontet Canet Sexy and Opulelent in my books but delicious across the board. I think du Tertre may not be in the same league but still producing lovely wines a the moment.

Both 2009 and 2010 are stellar vintages with the scale across the board tipping to 2010s. Tannins slightly more approachable now with every side by side tasting in my hands tipping towards the 2010 but we are really splitting hairs.

2013 I think is a right off across the board. I wouldn't waste my money on anything no matter what the price. This is a vintage to pass on.

2011 and 2012 are better than I had initially been led to believe and will look to fill some holes as opportunity comes along.

I can't seem to find 2012 du Tertre in the U.S. (Or 09 or 10 for that matter.)
I was telling Howard that I've been having trouble finding it in general in the past ten years.

Jim - Wine Searcher shows 2012 du Tertre all over the place. Total Wine has it at $40 in almost every state in the Union except Maine. A few places are showing at $37-$39.

If you don't have Wine Searcher Pro, you really should...

The 2000 du Tertre was a co-winner with the 2000 Pichon Baron, Hound.

Yes, the du Tertre was a dark horse at one of our NYC BWE gatherings to taste a bunch of 2000s before their time - pretty close after release if I recall. Its performance propelled it all the way to co-WOTY. Another case where BWE saw the magic before it was apparent elsewhere?

Yes, du Tertre is a BWE kind of wine.
That 2000 tasting at the Iroquois Hotel in NYC is where we first met the owners of Corbin, Lagrange, and d'Issan back in 2004.

Rauzan Segla 2012 is amazing. I has it six months ago at a 2012 tasting and it was my favourite left bank 2012 by a decent margin.

I am engaged in another discussion on Du Tertre vs. Giscours. This is what another punter said:

"Du Tertre is the tart, the jailbait. It always seduces ahead of Giscours. There isn't really a "proper" new Giscours to measure as none have got to maturity yet but it is the more serious wine."

Has anyone tried the 2000 Du Tertre lately?

Ian,

ITNOS I'll pop a 2000 du Tertre tonight and report back. Last one I had was 6mths back and remember the shine was not quite as strong as previous and uncertain whether it was retreating to an awkward stage, less than optimal bottle or starting to slide. I think I've only got 4 left out of a case and a half and certainly this was one of my value wines bought at $27.

Here's my most recent note on the 2000 from 3/2012:
2000 Château du Tertre
A huge, super ripe bouquet here, no decanting necessary. Very fresh, very floral nose, but also with exotic notes of fig, anise, lavander, Indian spice tea. Reminds me a bit of the 2000 Charmail's bouquet from a few nights ago, but with a bit more class and some Bordeaux typicity making an appearance to add some needed gravitas to the affair. The palate is fully resolved with a silky mouthfeel and only some wood tannin left on the finish, this puppy is wide open. There's a southern Rhone profile to the flavor here, with a bit of garrigue and cured meat. The fruit-acid-glycerin is in balance, with the fleshy midpalate showing the ripeness, but it's not overly sweet nor heavy at all. Drink now and enjoy the fireworks or wait 5-ish years to see if more nuance develops. That bouquet is a head-turner. This style will wow both sides of the pond. Indeed, a sexy beast, as our friends in the commonwealth might say, and I like it! 92 pts.

Blanquito.

I agree with your description thoroughly in 2012. Early 2015 I was not as impressed with shut down nose and some fading fruit. Didn't detect any cork taint but who knows so I'll try another this weekend and report back. I've loved their wines and I think they are only improving. There blend in the range of 40%CS;35;mer;20 CF;5%PV gives lovely complexity and roundness that I love for a great price relative to their neighbors.

Not that much chateau du Tertre available in Québec, but in the last days, I've been ok to secure 4 bottles of the 2010! Even if we did not tasted it at the Chateau, I'm pretty sure it is excellent.
