A Few Gems incl 82 Gruaud

Post by dstgolf »

Great day on the links with my winos and took them down hard playing for a few dollars making it a freebee for dinner to follow at local BYOB with spouses.

Fauna did a lovely job with dinner and showed off our wines beautifully.

2006 Monbousquet Blanc is in a word delicious. Mostly Sauv Blanc with Semillion and touch muscadet. Oily, lanolin, beeswax and honey with citrus notes and integrated oak. Theme of the night was balance with everything we drank and went fabulously well with BC spot prawns and crab anglonotti app. 92 pts

1998 Gaja San Lorenzo initially pop and pour did this a disservice. Closed upon opening and gradually started to strut 45-60min in glass. New world craft with still present ripe tannins. Smoke, pepper and plum/cherry and flowers. Beautiful wine but I think this is 5-10 years still from prime even though so tasty now with food.94 pts

1982 Gruaud Larose is just singing. Wow Wow Wow. This is what I live for in mature Bordeaux a point. Cordier funk aside and it is very present this is perfect balance with bricking on edge, nice acidity, leather, cedar and tar. Man I loved this tonight and I'll be interested to see what direction GL heads into with their new winemaker going forward who swears there will be no brett in her wine. Can't believe I saying this because I have been totally put off southern rhone wines because of the off putting brett. This was stunning tonight.97pts

1995 Guigal Cote Rotie Ampuis also a beauty. New world crafting and pleasing all corners of the mouth. We were expecting one of the LaLa's to arrive tonight but this was no slouch.Again all balance with beefy notes, lighter fruit than expected for syrah and smoke. Very nice but on this night it was outshone by the bottle that preceeded it. 92pts

Life's pretty good!

The leather in the 1982 Gruaud Larose is amazing. One of my all time favorite wines.

Does a good bottle of G-L 1982 trump every other vintage from this estate?

I'm a big fan of the '86 but the '82 is at another level.
The '82 is in my top ten greatest wines ever.

I think so, at least from 1970-present.

The 83 is surprisingly good and 86 has come into its own a step above the 83 but the 82 is on a different level altogether. Apart from style differences this is up there with some of the greatest 82s .

PS Ian,

I have not had a better vintage of GL than the 82 heading back to 75. I`ve not had anything older so can`t comment.

I'm with Danny here - the 1982 is the best Gruaud I've ever had.

Danny I had it three of four times. We did a 30th anniversary 1982 dinner in 2012 and it was the pick of the super seconds on the night, even trumping Pichon Lalande and LLC.

I think between 1982 and 1988 G-L was in a sweet spot. The 1983 and 1986 have been mentioned and the 1985 and 1988 deserve a mention too.

I agree that you stop at 1988. The 89 and 90 are good but overrated.

1982 was spectacular for Talbot, Beychevelle, and Gruaud Larose.

I am on board, I think the 83 and 85 Gruauds are really good, and I concur that the 89 and especially the 90 are overrated.

I have had the 1982 on two occasions, and thought it was absolutely outstanding both times. I also have had the 1989 which was good but not great. And I've had the privilege of enjoying the 1949 with a good buddy collector - it was about 10 years ago, and that bottle on that night was every bit as good as the 1982!

At a dinner with BWEers a few years ago, organized by Winona Chief, i thought the 1982 Château Gruaud Larose was better than the 1982 of Grand-Puy Lacoste, Pichon Lalande and Haut-Brion, opened the same night.

At the 2014 convention, someone brought a 1966 Château Gruaupd Larose and it was gorgeous. I tried it two other times before finding it nice only. So that bottle in 2014 was special.

I brought a 1955 Gruaud Larose to Sonoma '06 that I acquired at that unnamed store in the Bay area.
It was very lovely as I recall. I believe that's about the last bottle I ever bought from that place.
