Top wines of the Bordeaux 2015 tour

Post by Comte Flaneur »

I have spend hours agonising about this. I have shuffled the order, crossed things out, re-shuffled. But I have finally come up with my top 25 wines, which does not include wines from Alex's Saturday night dinner.

25. Pontet Canet 2009 - the potential is there, but I thought it was a tad awkward
24. Pontet Canet 1962 - splendid
23. Petrus 1934 - thrilling merci Michael
22. Du Tertre 2009 - beautiful
21. Ducru Beaucaillou 1978 - ethereal
20. Figeac 2011 - let's hope the elegance and refinement of this wine is not lost in subsequent vintages
19. La Lagune 1981 - shows how well these wines age
18. La Mission Haut-Brion 2007 - who said 2007 is a duff vintage? Not here.
17. Haut-Brion 2007 - beat the Mish in a photo finish
16. Pontet Canet 2012 - not as suave as the 11, but meatier, top drawer
15. Pichon Baron 1988 - a claret aficionados dream
14. Château D'Yquem 2011 - another masterpiece
13. Pontet Canet 2000 - coming into its stride majestically
12. Chateau D'Yquem 1995 - full on, under-rated
11. Pichon Baron 2009 - its only weakness is the 2010
10. Chateau Latour 1988 - low key but enormous gravitas, the 2004 in 16 years
9. Pontet Canet 2005 - my pick on the table
8. Pavillon Rouge 2004 - best ever second wine I have tried
7. Smith Haut Lafitte 2009 - a thrill ride
6. Pontet-Canet 2011 - mesmerising
5. Chateau Palmer 2006 - suave, svelte and magical
4. Pichon Baron 2010 - a superstar of the greatest ever left bank vintage
3. Cheval Blanc 1975 - intoxicating, exuberant, vibrant, best ever 75
2. Chateau Margaux 2004 - the tour may have been a shambles but the magic shines on through
1. Leoville-Lascases 2012 - perfection in a glass. Nothing forced. This is how I like my Bordeaux to be.

What were your favourites...top five, ten, 20, 25?

Is the 2012 Leoville Las Cases already ready to drink?

At number 24, du Tertre 2012 stumbles and loses its early BWE WOTY lead.

Jim - I have to say that I find it rather odd to see that you did not list the 1989 Lynch Bages that Francois blind tasted you on in your top 25 wines of the tour.

The former codependents are on the outs just now.

Now, Now Tom! It`s tough to line up top 25 when you`ve drank/tasted about 140 wines in 6 days especially when there were so many fabulous wines. Who will quibble about where they place in this list when most people don't even get to enjoy one off this list in their lifetime. I know the people on this board are exceptions and that's why I like to hang out with like minded people!

JKBA Jim might have left the 89 LB off the list as this was enjoyed by a few on Sat night before the event kicked off Sunday night in Bordeaux. I've included Sat wines in my list.

Trying to get my list in somewhat order

25. 2014 Conseillante
24. 2010 La Dominique
23. 2003 Pontet Canet
22. 2011 Y'quem
21. 1998 Gruaud Larose
20. 2003 Dom Perigon
19. 2006 Palmer
18. 34 Petrus
17. 2009 SHL
16. 1995 Y'quem
15. 1988 Pichon Baron
14. 2012 du Tertre
13. 2000 Pontet Canet
12.1961 Leoville Las Cases
11. 1989 Lynch Bages
10. 2006 Coche Dury Puligny Montrachet Les Enseigners
09. 1975 Cheval Blanc
08. 1993 Haut Brion
07. 2009 Pichon Baron
06. 09 du Tertre
05. 2005 Pontet Canet
04. 2001 Y'quem
03. 1989 Pape Clement
02. 2010 Pichon Baron
01. 2009 Pontet Canet

Honourable mention to the 1962 Pontet Canet challenge and they were both good just couldn't fit them into the top 25. Somehow the 1988 Latour bypassed me on Sunday night and I blame it on Rhoda!!

Correct me if I am wrong but it would appear that so did Jim as wasn't the 2001 Yquem which was his top wine also get opened at that very same dinner?

That 89 Lynch was as tight as a drum, jckba, it was a bad week for LB.

You devils! You demons! You pointy-eared, red-faced, horned and tailed, cloven-hooved forked-tongued enablers! All this siren song talk of Pichon Baron. You've made me post in the "what have you bought lately" thread, once again breaking my "no 2010s" pledge!

Now while we're on the topic...

How can MichaelP bring a vibrant 1934 Petrus, and it not be in the top 5 wines of the trip? Seriously.

hm$,

The label surely should have put it in the top five and along with the company top 3 but the wine blinded....not so much. I was amazed that an 81 year old wine was still as fresh as it was but it just didn`t turn my crank anywhere close to the 75 Cheval or even the 61 Las Cases both in the geriatric class.
