Come on. If I want a “pure” wine that drinks well young and shows no brett and has “glorious depth of fruit” and 15% alcohol, I just get some mid-90’s Cali Cab (see what I did there?). Indeed I’m enjoying a 1996 Dunn Howell Mtn Cab tonight. BACK FILL, even for your “young” fruit bombs. Don’t subsidize Rolland’s malpractice.

I am guessing K&L has a pretty sophisticated dynamic pricing algo, not wildly dissimilar from the airlines, since they don't need to resort to storewide sales ever, and they have a very full cycle sales model - current release, customers disposing of cellars at retail, and auction as well. In general, given the dollars strength in recent years, I don't really understand why some of these imported wines aren't a shade cheaper, but I guess someone must be buying them.

There is an interesting thread on WB btw about Bryant Family's accountant* being fired for not willing to alter their financial statements for a bank loan renewal. Apparently their very high end wines are moving sluggishly, and now getting added to 'library stocks'. In the auto biz we wouldn't call unsold metal 'library wines' but hey every racket has its own jargon....

* lawsuits are going on. Also in another wine related lawsuit someone posted a link to a private vendor which had more court details of the never ending Premier Cru bk. It is still dragging on, and the trustee is up to 4mm in (undistributed) clawbacks from unfortunate people who touched the principals. I guess to me the most interesting thing is what is happening to the folks who bought 70 cases of Lafite from him.

I realize the price doesn't seem low, but considering the growth in new release prices this may not be too bad....

Ben @ CellarRaiders has a case of the 2000 Carmes Haut Brion at $89

I think I paid $75/per EP way back when (which was too high of a price in that era, but it was much harder to find 20 years ago)

I already have a bottle hiding somewhere, but that's a good price.

Winex is having their Bastille Day Sale today, 10% off in stock (non pre arrival) French wines.

Supposedly no coupon code needed, the discount will show up at checkout.

In the past, I've gotten some ok deals there on that day. Prices are usually fair enough to begin with there.

However, their 'new & improved' website is so crappy that its painful, and 5 minutes of trying to do a simple sort of their in stock BDX, sorted on price (so I could post a link here) proved impossible so I gave up.

Maybe some of you will have better luck. But there is a ton of PA among their stock list so searching is annoying.

Historically they will Hold Til Ship for 6 mo, but you will need to inspect your shipping carton carefully & immediately upon arrival. Seriously.

Flatiron Wines in NYC and San Fran are both offering a 15% off all wines purchased on-line between now and end-of-day Monday, August 19th when using coupon code SUMMER15. Their selection is great and generally also at full retail so the percentage savings may help in that respect.

Zachys is having an actual burgundy sale with decent markdowns and while a bunch of things have sold through, I am sure they will add some more at some point to get people to look again

Long shot but for those of with Amex cards, check your Amex Offers - there might be a Spend X get Y type of Offer attached to your card, which can stack with this sale, assuming they get the billing done by offer expiry. Sometimes if a vendor doesn't charge til they ship one can miss offer deadlines. One can try to get to the vendor to 'push' the charge early though.

I think I had a $30 off spending $150 at Sherry Lehman on one of ours.

K&L is offering via their Insiders Advantage the 16 Enclos Tourmaline for $89 per. At one point this was only on sale in 3 packs for $450, en primeur. It seems like market reception must have been cool, so its now sold in singles, on the shelf. They have 3+ cases, at least as of last night. This is a new Pomerol made by the Kwok's, and has good reviews, although has not established a big user base yet.

And shameless plug for another deal -- I'm parting ways with my cruel fiberglass mistress (i.e. an old Burgundy C3)

I think there's only one way for you to find out, DavidG.

The 1958 Lynch I uncorked with Tom and Gail at my house last year was pretty grim.
The 1958 Haut Brion that Tim uncorked was a beauty though.

1956 is a serious contender for worst vintage in recorded history of vintages.

I served a 1956 Gillette to Tom and Gail (we share the same birth year). It was one sip ITNOS and down the drain.

If I gamble on the low shoulder bottle, I’m only out $225. But then I’ll wonder if one of the mid shoulder bottles at $375 or the presumably top shoulder bottle at $595 would have been better. This is a sickness...

I think you’re right, buy the less expensive one.
Just back from a couple of days in NY.
Stopped by for a short visit with Jacques and Jill to catch up.
They look great, Jacques in good spirits and with a foot that looks like it’s healing well.
Saw Dear Evan Hansen Tuesday night and Bonnie Raitt and Mark Knopfler at MSG last night. Both excellent.
Gotta throw out a big thumbs up for Kung Fu Little Steamed Buns Ramen. Shanghai pan fried pork buns, pan fried Peking duck buns, scallion pancake with sliced beef, stir fried ramen noodles. http://www.kfdelicacy.com/menu

K&L is offering the 2016 Marsau [Cotes de Bordeaux] for $14 this morning.

It used to be AOC Cote de Francs once upon a time.

I've had the 2000, 2001, 2003 over the years and they are all quite good (especially the first).

They seem to have lots.

=============

For those who like nebbiolo, Chambers St Wines this last week have been selling a lot of very old Barolo/Barbaresco at modest prices.

The producers are mostly unknown, or long out of business, so they are not 'investment grade' labels, but Jamie/David say the wines are good/sound.

The cellar was sourced in Italy, and it seems to be quite large.

If interested, sign up for their mailing list.

Its that time of year when Amex Offers go crazy for wine sales. Most of them are junk, but possibility that a $30 off $150 purchase at Sherry Lehman might be of interest to some here. If you have an Amex card, check your online account for the offers; you might have to scroll through a bunch of junky ones. Not everyone gets the same ones, but if you've bought wine in the past, or fit certain demographic profiles, the odds are good you'll see some offers. Probably have a dozen wine related ones on our profile, but they're typically wine clubs or single estates trying to sell direct, so not of interest. And of course, its usually only fat margin retailers that have the 'couponing' craze anyways.

At the bottom of the online home page, there should be some Amex Offers, maybe 5-6, start scrolling and more should be there. I'd think you would be heavily targeted for this.

As you use them, they start throwing more at you. The 'magic' of these is that they can stack on any other deals you might find with said retailer.

K&L has 8 btls of the 1990 Croix du Casse [Pomerol] for $50

Some of you might remember that back in this era the wine was made by Jean Michel Arcaute, who was also known for his 89 and 90 Clinet.

I had the 90 CdC some years ago and it was quite good.

That price is about the same as what it traded for for at the turn of the century.

For those of you who are local to HDH, or can get shipping from them, they have a time sensitive online offer on some items e.g.

15 La Grave a Pomerol $42
16 Pagodes de Cos $42
16 Clos du Marquis $50
16 Giscours $53
16 Brane Cantenac $59

There's lots more

http://www.hdhwine.com/retail-wine-list ... torder=asc

It seems to me that the retail inventory at HDH is pretty much the same all the time. It looks like most of these wines were offered last year at the same time for similar prices. I knew I felt some deja vu looking at that stock list, and then looked up my November 2018 post on the Deals thread.

oi vay.

wine.com had some good coupons for $100 off $300 purchases and had some prices like $24 for 16 Lilian Ladouys, $40 for 16 Meyney. Those are pre discount prices. I have not used them before though although they seem to use FedEx/Walgreens for fulfillment which would work.

generally I think Nov/Dec aren't good times to buy wine, as that's when everything is full freight. Feb is a good time to load up, at least for all the retail cycles around me.

which reminds me....on Monday Dec 2 is Winex's CyBordeaux Monday sale. It may have some stuff of interest, as they can sharpen their pencil when they want to. They're ok, but if you order from them, check your shipments immediately. My error rate from them has been crazy high, so I generally don't use them anymore.

Meyney can be had for $33 at Internet Wines....got my case delivered recently with no mishap....

Please share any deals you may come across today....i think that February may in fact have better pricing, but inventory may be gone at those shops that currently have competitive pricing. That has happened to me quite a few times.

It would take a big group with a really special relationship to it to drink a whole jero of 1989 Lynch Bages.
Hmmm, I wonder where such a group could be found?

1989 Lynch Jeroboam??? Jimmy Howe is on his way to your home.....run and hide...

I did acquire a few large format bottles for special occasions including methuselah of 2000 La Dominique and think such format bottles are absolutely a conversation piece at a large gathering
