Winex is offering the 1990 Lagrange [Pomerol] for $80 currently. This one causes confusion with the St Julien of the same name, but there is indeed a Pomerol of that name. It's part (or it was in this era) of the JP Mouiex empire. Unlike most the rest of their stable it tends not to be smooth silky merlot, but perhaps time has deburred it a little. This estate is not seen stateside very much. I've had a few of the good vintages from the 90's era, and they were 'ok'.

That 1990 Lagrange Pomerol was the wine I brought to the blind Pomerol wine tasting you organized in NYC late nineties or early 2000.
I remember clearly it winning wine of the flight to which Ben Whuzzup Nelson said ya gotta love blind tastings.
After the reveal of the wines, it wasn't even close in the top rankings that evening. Whatever that means.

Ben at CellarRaiders sent out an interesting list of wines, mostly non speculator grade, but perhaps of interest to the BWE. e.g. that 71 Gazin might be ok, as it was an ok year for Pomerol, when generally most of the dry red wines in Bordeaux were not keepers. Probably a few other cool items, but also a lot of execrable stuff too. NB I have not actually dealt with Ben directly, maybe 10-15 years ago we had a friend who would source items from him typically to flesh out verticals/horizontals, so he dealt with all the mechanics. I have never heard of problems though.

Their website is https://cellaraiders.com/

Hmm I've been looking for a Mouton from my birth year of 1958, I believe that's a Dali label.

It is indeed the Dali label.
1958 was a poor year in Bordeaux, the Lynch I had was bad, very bad, but the 1958 Haut Brion that Timmy brought to his 50th birthday party in Bordeaux was very lovely. Do you think they were harvesting the cabernet at Mouton on the fateful day of September 24th back in 1958? That wine is so old that Ike was still president, Sputnik was up in orbit....

Seems like a pretty risky way to spend $500 bucks. Mid shoulder. CT doesn't seem favorable towards it.

How important is it to you that your birth year wine be a Bordeaux at this point? Lots of awesome 58 Barolo's out there. The Borgogno is lovely.

Yeah, Joel, I’m not real excited to get it, it would be more a collectors item than anything, the Bordeaux of 1958 are not good. The idea of a Mouton with a Dali label with grapes harvested from the week I was born has some sentimental value, but probably not $495 worth. If it were a hundred bucks less I might buy it just to have it in my cellar.

If it's just for the label, I bet empty bottles of that could be found somewhere actually. Probably for a whole lot less. Although the Rudy's of the world may be buying those up for other purposes (although they'd probably pick better vintages)

The only empty from 1958 on eBay is Lafite. The label is pretty crummy. You can buy the bottle for $80. The current bid is $30.

I don't remember ever tasting a 1958 first growth.

I’m not interested in empty bottles. Even if the wine sucks, the idea that it is juice harvested the week I was born 64 years ago is kind of cool, just not worth $495 of sentimentality. $495 is just a bit much. I’d pay $395. TomDC and I sipped from the rancid 1918 Haut Brion when he was at my house. The 1962 LLC I bought in Florida when we visited Stuart ended up being very lovely.

Haut Brion 20 years ago was one level better than doesn’t suck.

Benchmark has some Bordeaux on sale. Note their T&C before purchasing as they are a bit prickly.

Sauternes / Barsac

Doisy Vedrines 2003, 2005, 2007 all in halves, $15 per
Myrat 2005 $15 full btls
de Cosse 2018 halves $15
Coutet 2003 $35
Suduiraut 2003 $45
Guiraud 2015 $35

Dry Reds

Labegorce 2016 $25

Perhaps there are other items of interest.

It may be an idea to get Latour or top Sauternes from 1958.
If you must have Mouton so be it but 1958 was a relatively light Bordeaux vintage.
I sometimes think we would have been better served by being born in 1959 or 61.
I’ve only once tasted a few 1958’s and they were well past their prime.

Cheers

Winex is celebrating Bastille Day by having a 1 day sale on in stock 2015 Bordeaux with 15% off, discount to be taken at checkout, so mentally adjust the prices you see on the link.

https://www.winex.com/product/2015.html ... rder=price

I took a quick skim, and there do seem to be some reasonable values, in the context of our inflationary times.

That’s certainly appreciated since en primeur, as have a lot of 2019s. An exception to the rule since the mid-90s.

It is actually not just below other prices, but in truly sexy magnum format. We had a 1989 out of magnum, and apart from the fun of having it in large format, it was far and away the best bottle I have had of it.

I think it was a likely a human error in the listing price as if current vintage VCC is coming out at $300+/per, how is a magnum from a great vintage with 15 years of age coming to market for less per bottle. It just doesn’t make sense and glad you guys were able to partake.

Not sure if this is also a typo, but Wally’s seems to still have 2019 Figeac magnums near or at original pricing ($335/1.5L)…I snagged a couple, got the order confirm, and card was charged and still see it listed so I presume there are more left. Seemed like good value, and if Figeac gets upgraded, for sure won’t see this pricing again. I’ll be curious to see if they honor and fulfill the order come Monday but figured it was worth mentioning….I’ll report back if they actually fulfill the order :?
