I've had older bottles, when I moved them from offsite to onsite, start seeping. The temperature change affects the ullage and eventually there can be leakage from that. The concern with older ones of course is that they were heat affected, and sometimes those stains are a cue to that.
This was definitely older seepage. Honestly, my theory is that he buys seepage occasionally either by accident, or negotiates a discount when purchasing. Then he resells at a lower than usual rate. Both bottles I have purchased from him that have seepage, have been value buys compared to the market. I think he just hopes it won't get noticed or the buyer won't say anything so he can move off inventory.
I don't think he's doing anything deliberately deceptive. I've bought more than a few bottles from Ben and have not had a bad one yet. One thing I do wish he included was some sort of condition description but I'm sure that would delay getting the inventory updated. I would suggest if the price is noticeably below market or if it's a pricey bottle is to call him or shoot him an e-mail asking for details, He's usually very prompt at responding with whatever info you want.
Thats possible Gerry. I didn't make that assertion lightly though. It was based off of multiple discussions and interactions through problems with orders and based on general quality of some of the bottles that I've received. Most were on the borderline of my minimum standards for fills, corks etc. Although, again on this order, in all fairness.. the other 5 bottles were in Very good condition. He does post about condition issues on some bottles though, so if it is left blank, then I assume it should be at least very good.

K&L has the 2012 Tertre Roteboeuf [St Emilion] for $104ish.

That's one of the lower prices for any vintage of the estate in the US, at least on free WS.

I haven't tasted it, or many 2012 right banks, but it has the reputation of being a decent/good year for those merlot driven AOCs.

We have a slightly different variant of these. Mrs AKR uses hers all the time, mostly to keep the sangria cool.

I still have never tried it, and the price still seems high for a generic wine, but K&L is offering the 2016 La Goulee for $27. Need to be logged in, and a subscriber to InsidersEdge emails to see the price.

https://www.klwines.com/p/i?i=1435527

It's from Cos d'Estournel and they make a deal of the association/linkage, but I suspect what they do is just bully the trade into taking some if they want the grand vin.

Still I have been curious to try a decent vintage, although I don't think anything more than a couple of sawbucks makes sense.

Woodland Hills Wine Company is having their annual sale right now and have some great deals. I loaded up on some NV Champagnes and Produttori single vineyards. Worth a look.

Millesima in Manhattan is offering 33% off some large format Bordeaux when you buy 3.

I know that many of you are Sociando fans, and jeroboam and imperial 2009/2010 minus a third sounds like a deal. Then of course there are the Mechiors and Balthazars of Giscours for the next BWE weekend.

For those of you who want to take a flyer

https://www.winebid.com/BuyWine/Item/75 ... Pin-Figeac

This estate is now gone as its own label...but its vineyards have been (partially) absorbed into neighboring Cheval Blanc.

A friend and I shared a case of the 1990 in halves around the turn of the century or so, and it was pretty good, in that herbal cab francy kind of way. I have not seen any of this tiny estate for a long, long time.

"That herbal Cab France kind of way" sounds like an Orlando Bobby kind of wine. But he's sworn off St Emilions.

Ben at CellarRaiders just got in another wacky older cellar. Lots of curiosities, some low priced.

That solid case of 89 Haut Marbuzet at $59 doesn't seem too bad. Good vintage. Estate is normally $35-$40 on release. 1990 usually goes for $60ish, although I've never had a really good one that was worth the money.

And if you have an Amex, check your Amex Offers as d'Artagnan participates in that. You may also have wine related offers too, although often of thinner value.

Thanks for the enablement. In true BWE fashion, I picked up a mixed case of 2016 bordeaux. Great prices. Including two JimHow recommendations on the Lynch Bages and La Dame De Montrose, at around 133 and 36 respectively including tax.

Kind of remarkable how Bordeaux prices are flat or dropping everywhere you look. HDH has huge supplies of the 2016 Pichon Baron at $140/bottle. I bought that wine for like $165 six months ago, and thought it was an OK price for such a highly rated wine from a supposed vintage of the century. I have like 8 or 9 bottles of it so I don't need any more (especially since I didn't love it when I tried it), but I really should have waited -- could have saved hundreds of dollars.

Interesting about HDH doing 15% off. Last year it was 20% and I took advantage, only because I had a trip planned to Chicago and could pick it up.

I had that 2016 La Dame de Montrose yet again, Joel, because I wanted to confirm whether I wanted to buy a case.
It is a stunner! I love it. $36 is a great price, it's like $47 in NH and will go down to $40 when on sale.

Shipping was only $35 to DC for me. I consider that reasonable. Unclear if they are shipping from Chicago or Delaware. I'll find that out on Monday.

This is my first time ordering from them, and I broke my normal rule of only paying for either sales tax or shipping, never both. But with these deals, for these wines it was worth it. It seemed pretty simple on the checkout and my shipment is already scheduled to leave on weds the 2nd.

I am excited to try the la dame, as I see it every day at Wegmans for 44+tax. Got 3 on this sale. Curious to see if it can beat out the Capbern or Lilian Ladouys

Total purchase of 2016's was(including tax, not shipping)
1x Lynch Bages @ 133
3x La Dame De Montrose @36
2x malartic@ 52
2x Cantenac brown @53
1x haut bailly @105
1x parde haut bailly @ 30
1x tronquoy lalande @31

1x 2010 Cantenac Brown@71 for good measure

From Chicago to Sacramento, a few years ago was $60/cs, and its likely gone up since then. They do pack unusually well. When they altered their retail operation (new releases basically now) and shipping was sort of paused for a while, I unsubscribed / stopped dealing with them.

But for a couple decades, my once or twice a year box from HDH (mostly single bottle purchases, held til ship) was always the highlight of shipping season. According to their website they have greatly changed their HTS policies, and now only grant 60 days gratis. Previously they were very generous in this dimension, a key item for me personally.

HDH's sale prices on their 15 & 16 La Grave a Pomerol ($42/per) and the 16 Latour a Pomerol ($75) are pretty fair in the context of our times. They also have a wine from Rene Rostaing - the 2015 Puech Noble - which is like a syrah driven Languedoc version of his Cote Rotie. It's not easy to find and if you like his wines, its a good $20 btl to fill out a case.

I haven't been buying anything for cellaring this year and HDH is generally outside my shopping radius but the price of the '16 Talbot was attractive to me. The two I have were $67 each.
I already have a dozen of the '16 La Dame or I might have been swayed to purchase a mixed case.
Best I keep my powder dry for something else more attractive.

Just a word of caution which Arv mentions — I heard the the HDH auction side, which relocated to Delaware I believe, wasn’t even providing a shipping service anymore! Apparently, the customer had to come up with their own shipping. Maybe that’s not longer the case.

Yes, something strange happened shipping wise with them some years ago. A few years ago I cut off most out of state retailers as I feared a national freeze. That has not come to pass, and as with many of my concerns, the worst doesn't usually come true.

My hunch is that they were playing games like Dennis Kozlowski (of Tyco fame) was with his out of state art auction purchases, and got tangled up in some high profile individuals audit, and were referred to state authorities for further investigation.

I got mine at Costco this summer on sale for $99!
ARGHH. So you are telling me that I basically lit $500 on fire by buying this wine at $160 -- that wipes out a huge fraction of my gains from being a shrewd shopper over the years. Let this put in perspective your worries about buying two bottles of Chevillon Vaucrains (an actual rare wine, annual production of a few hundred cases vs. 18,000 cases for PB) at $157!

I just emailed HDH. If they will ship to me, upon Joel's enablement, I will get:
6 x 2016 Lynch Bages @126
12 x 2016 La Dame de Montrose @ $34

If it makes you feel any better, Marcus, this was a pretty hardcore sale — the Pichon Baron was priced $160 there before going on sale.

All told at this sale, I got 7 bottles of the 2016 PIchon Baron for $99, 4 bottles of the 2016 Lynch Bages for $99, 3 bottles of the 2016 Cos d’Estournel for $130, and 6 bottles of the 2016 Giscours for $50.

I figure if I don’t like these down the road, I can resell at a healthy profit. I mean, the 16 Cos is already going at auction for like $225 a bottle!: https://www.klwines.com/Auction/Bidding ... archRank=2

Yeah before I placed my order with HDH I told them I was interested in buying those bottles but only if they shipped to Maine.

The response I got:

Hello,

Thank you for your order. Yes, we can ship to Maine. Place the order online, and you will be contacted next week with options and scheduling.

Thank you,

Now I have cold feet.

I'm not a huge fan of Brunello, but K&L has a ton on sale (plenty of 2015s for sub $30) if you log into to your account. It reminds me of that time Zachys send around a list of 20-30 estates that were all $30 a pop for the 2010 vintage.

https://tinyurl.com/yyp53zpb

I've always thought this was a category with 'brittle' pricing. High prices on release, that are not supported with secondary market validation. And there is no hospitality/travel outlet to sell them to cruises, airlines, biz lounges who can sort of use them in $18 BTG programs.

Grapes Wine Co. of Westchester is having a 25% Cyber Monday sale, on purchases above 12 btls

On their front page banner.

I'm not sure how shipping works with them (now) but they were always a serious store.

A local store has 1993 Ch. Lagrange on the shelf for $59. Should I buy 1 or 3 or more?

One.
And much thanks again for your enablement on that 2015 Larose Trintaudon, I love that wine, it's like under $20 when on sale in NH.
Wonderfully stern.

Unfortunately there was no 1993 Ch. Lagrange on the shelf. The store manager suggested it was due to a typo when data was being uploaded. They do have bottles of the 2015, but listed at a higher price - $64.99. I was only interested because I've had so few bottles from the '90s, and I haven't ever drank Lagrange.
They didn't have the one bottle of 2016 Marsac Seguineau listed online either, although they have plenty in another store a few miles away in the other direction.
So I bought one bottle of 2016 Ch. La Cardonne, a Medoc Cru Bourgeois that I've been buying since 2009 vintage. The '09 and '10 are old school, but the '15 and '16 have gone modern with high alc and new oak. I don't plan on buying more of either vintage.

Jim, I currently have 65 bottles of L-T across 5 vintages, 30 of the 2015. I don't think I've had a corked bottle from that chateau. It's very consistent.

(edited to correct the vintage)

Ah ok I thought it was 93 Lagrange as opposed to 95.
The 95 is a nice wine, I doubt there are still many 93s out there on the shelves.
Yeah, I need to get down to NH and scoop up a case of the 15 Larose Trintaudon, that is a nice classic Medoc.

That was a typo. I meant '93. It seemed highly unlikely they would have it but required in person verification.

I hear rumors of double mags of 2016 La Lagune in Bay Area Costco's for $179.97

The concrete floor cognoscenti would recognize that is a closeout price.

Don't know which stores, nor have I seen any of those dmags in the wild....

Glad to see the site is back up and running!!!
