I am sure most of you were inundated with offers for Chateau Latour's 2017 release of the 2005 vintage including proof tags yesterday, well a buddy of mine who works at Pop's Wine & Spirits out in Island Park, NY is willing to extend their friends and family pricing of $808/btl to anyone who is registered to this site. 6 btl OWC's available on request. Email Ted Clark at ted.clark@popswine.com and tell him that I sent ya.

Very wide price dispersion for that 2005 Latour. There is an economic theory that suggests price dispersion is smaller proportionately for big ticket items - a box of paper clips varies more in price than a car does (percentage wise). This seems to violate that.

======

Total Wine sent me a coupon that may be applicable nationwide: $40 off a $200 purchase. It's not a percentage one, fixed $40 only, so to maximize the discount (20%) one needs to buy exactly $200 of 750ml or 1.5ml wine. Can't be anything that ends in a price tag of 7 either. online code 3876 and instore PLU 3876 code for cashier. I think they tend to be overpriced, but with a coupon like that they can be reasonable enough, especially given that stuff is in stock usually. They might have some 2014's in by now. The other way to extract some value from those kinds of coupons is to stack them with other orange tagged closeouts.

Thanks for thinking of us jckba.
It's a little above my price range but that nonetheless seems like a "good" price.
I placed an order or two with Pop's way back in the day, but then I thought they got out of the heavy duty Bordeaux business.

Yeah it's multiples of my self-imposed max $ per btl as well. Ted is trying to re-establish the Pops Bdx business and the only way to do this in this day in age is to be price competitive, at $808.72/btl he is one of the cheapest prices in the country according to winesearcher-pro and about 10% less than the average price that was being emailed out earlier in the week.

In other somewhat related news, Total Wine is coming to NY and more specifically to Westbury in an old sports authority location and is scheduled to open in the fall of this year.

Benchmark just mailed out their Spring "sale" note. The prices seem way higher on many of the same wines that didn't leap off the shelves in the last sale, back in Jan.

https://www.benchmarkwine.com/collectio ... =price-asc

I didn't think there was anything of note. (81 d'Angludet $60?! that's usually half the price, and questionable even at that)

They send a lot of emails to their clients, which is tolerated in exchange for the heads up on the periodic sales, when things can be had for decent enough rates. It doesn't come with the puffery of Rimmerman or the sheer 'our customers don't have winesearcher' bravado of Zachys but its still a lot, and most of the the time is the same inventory, just presented a different way. (great vintages! top scores!)

They have a lot at all locations; it is well reviewed across the major critics.

I haven't had any of the 2004 sweet Bordeaux, but the perception is that its more of a functional vintage, rather than a collector/cellarable one.

Odd numbered vintages in the last 10-15 years are the better regarded, but more costly ones.

My feel is that these are pretty much always very drinkable, no matter what the vintage/critical perception is.

This estate keeps well, we've had the 2001 and 1986 in the last year, and only the latter was tired.
It looks like K&L has gotten tired of this sitting on their shelves, not moving for 4 months.

The 2004 Nairac is now offered at $22.50 and they have a lot, at all locations.

That is pretty darn good.

So what if it is not a trophy/collectible/take to a wine dinner kind of vintage.

At that price, that's a sticky you can pop open on school nights and leave in the fridge for a glass a night, over a week.

Annoyingly I was picking up stuff at K&L on Sunday, and the price only got cut today, and I'm not really sure I will get back there within the 3mos pick up time frame.

But its shipping season for those who can still get deliveries from K&L.

I just bought a 6 pack of Andrew Will 2012 Ciel du Cheval from the winery with a coupon (sent out to their mailing list. Someone PMed me the coupon code) for under $40/bottle including delivery to CT. ($210 plus shipping)
Regular retail was around $68 before shipping, so close to 45% off.

K&L has a case-ish of

1990 Leoville Las Cases [St Julien] $230

as well as the rarity of

1990 Gilette 'Creme de Tete' [Sauternes] also at $230

No word on the provenance, so likely just from regular consumer resellers.

I'm not sure if the G is a deal, but its not seen very much.

There are only 1 or 2 of these but perhaps someone wants these from K&L

Dassault has some kind of relationship with the French aviation company if I remember correctly.

Winex is throwing in the towel on their stocks of 2012 BDX.

an additional 15% off any 2012 Bordeaux purchase of $250 dollars or more! Just USE THE CODE: 15OFF12 at checkout.

I can't tell if that applies on only Good Friday (today) or if its ongoing.

They don't run percentage sales very often, just a few times a year, so it's likely to be a short lived sale (until the next one of course)

https://www.winex.com/wines-PL-Bordeaux ... -SY-3.html

There are some definite deals there (prices shown are net, before tax/shipping, assuming coupon code use) examples that are in stock include:

2012 La Dauphine $16
2012 Latour Martillac rouge $25
2012 Malartic Graviere rouge $34
2012 Haut Batailley $34
2012 Dom. de Chevalier rouge $45
2012 Haut Bailly $59.50

Sadly I paid more on release for some of these names, and don't feel like I need/want more of these.

Separately K&L got in some splits of the 2014 Lillian Ladouys [St Estephe] for $10.50 per.

That seems very reasonable for a wine that was rated 90+ by a half dozen critics, and in a useful midweek, drink by yourself format.

Only a few cases of that though.

That one I'll grab a few of, since I quite liked their wines in 2003, and more distantly 1990.

I just got an email from Total Wine Concierge Sales with a special on 2010 Chateau Lagrange.
1-5 Btl Price: $59.97/btl
6-11 Btl Price: $57.97/btl
12+ Btl Price: $54.97/btl
The prices are only good thru the Concierge sales website for one week (to April 25), and are on pre-arrival status (4-8 week wait time).

Previously, the best price I've found for this is $59.99 per bottle at Gary's.
I might get up to 3 bottles myself but the extra 8% off for a full case is very attractive.

K&L is offering the 2014 Maillet [Pomerol] for $20. Previously this was mid thirties, and inexplicably, capacity controlled - in that buyers were limited to 12 bottles or something.

I'd never heard of it but it got good reviews in 2015, and I think I ordered on EP. They must have been forced to take the 2014 in order to get 2015, and are now taking their loss and running.

=====

Benchmark had some 1990 l'Arrosee for $100 as well as 1990 Roc de Cambes for $70.

1990 right banks are super and continue to drink very well.

2007 Coutet [Barsac] for $35 at K&L

They have absolutely tons, at least 3 cases per location.

So perhaps the price might eventually dip lower, as the 2005 Coutet did out on the West Coast, but its still fair enough, and in bottle, and in stock, and less costly than anything else available.

I'm also biased, and think they make one of the very best sweet Bordeaux, surpassed only by the more costly d'Yqeum (academic), Climens, and Rieussec (usually only a smidge more).

Coutet brings a fine brightness to her wines, Rieussec has the glaceed apricots/orange notes.

If scores matter, everyone has rated it in the mid 90's, but these sweet wines are always delightful, even if the market (happily!) doesn't care.

Chambers St Wines in NYC has some 75 Pomerols, both Petit Village and Nenin for $100 and $90 respectively.

About half a case of each. They typically guarantee the provenance of their older wines, which is unusual in the industry.

JJB with some possibilities

2014 Clinet $62
2014 Carbonnieux $30
2014 Barde Haute $28
2014 Gloria $32
2014 Prieur Lichine $35
2012 Teyssier $20
2012 Latour Martillac $29
2011 Bernadotte $14

Those are their regular prices, perhaps if one gets 'private client prices' they might get a better deal.

My instinct is that 2014 prices might soften up still further.

That Gloria price isn't much more than where it was decades ago, and their wine - always lovely - has earned acclaim with current vintages.

Barde Haute is a bargain if one enjoys the right bank Merlot dominated Bordeaux. I remember this producer being priced in mid 30's for vintages going back 10 years, so for a very solid vintage like 2014, it represents value and is priced as an every day drinker

2000 Bourgneuf $49 3
1970 Grand Puy Lacoste- mid shoulder or better $55 7
1970 Gruaud Larose 3cm fills $109 3
2000 Leoville Barton $159 34
1982 Ormes de Pez $49 1

I'd also observe that K&L seems to have started doing multiple layers of price chopping, which I hadn't really noticed before.

GVWM has various vintages of Corbin and Larmande like 2008, 2012, 2014 all in the $22-$25 zone.

Probably fairly described as good drinking vintages, rather than collector years.

But those prices are pretty low for functional St Emilion. NB that Larmande is in the Clive Coates / AFWE camp.

Grand Vin is a UPS shipper only, so may not work for everybody. They are the storefront operation of BWL.

Great post. You should have some Wine Education before take part in any online wine auction for old and rare wine.

Not so sure about old and/or rare wine, but I think a young zinfandel might pair well with spam.

No, Lynch bought Haut Batailley which was once part of the same property as Batailley but not since it was split.
MMMh? Last I checked Haut Batailley and Grand Puy Lacoste have the same owner and it is not Lynch Bages...
