2004 La Lagune: Undrinkable?

Post by JimHow »

This is the second bottle from a case that I've had.
It is hard, flat, even more boring than a '93 Batailley.
I'm guessing He Who Shall Remain Nameless gave it about 79 points?
Yuck.

Wine Advocate #171
Jun 2007 Robert M. Parker, Jr. Drink: 2007 - 2021 $49-$120 (31)
A sleeper of the vintage, this sexy, charming, Burgundian-styled wine offers fleshy black cherry notes intermixed with camphor, flowers, and pain grille. Supple tannin, velvety texture, and luscious aromatics as well as flavors result in an alluring claret to drink over the next 12-14 years. 90 pts.

It sounds like the description of a closed down wine. But at age 11, it seems like it should be beyond that, especially La Lagune.

I'm wondering if it is damaged.
I'm going to uncork a 2002 Branaire and come back to the La Lagune.

The '04 has been in a shell for a long time. Not sure that it will shed it. The core is solid so I have some hope, but it is only hope at this point.

I'll see your 2004 Ch. la Lagune and raise you one 2000 Ch. d'Angludet. It's either the world's most backward wine ever or your basic, solid, 59-pointer. Bought as future, owned since release, three or four of six bottles, all terrible. And it was highly touted of itself and as the under-the-radar product of one of the (then?) tri-owners of Ch. Palmer(?). Some guy named Sichel or other.

Try a 24 hour double decant for some of those hard wines. It isn't going to hurt.

24 hours later the wine is even more thin and unbearable.
It just seems grossly underripe.
I can't imagine a wine LESs like Burgundy.
I had a 2002 Branaire last night instead that was cooking with grease.

Popped open a 1979 La Lagune this evening. Wow, this is really a nice wine. Cigar box, leather, touch of green tomato, moderate tannins but fully integrated, just lovely. Blows away the 1996 Cru Bourgeois that I had alongside it (sorry Alex). I am simply floored at how well drinking this is now.

I wonder if the 2004 will eventually hit a window like the 79. I tend to like 79's, they are not sought after (picked up the La Lagune for only 20 Euros), and they are drinking very nicely right now.

The 78 Lagune has also been drinking fantastically for at least 5 years. A recent bottle was one of the best and much like you describe the 79 (which I don't think I've had).

These aren't quite as cheap as 20 Euros here but I've scored the 78 for $35-$40 over the last 5 years at auction. I just have to beat Stefan to the punch!

Just don't overbid me, Patrick! I need to reload the '78, which is the birth year of my daughter.

Tim, I also like '79s.

Tim, at age 10 both the '78 and the '79 La Lagune were good even if both improved after that. I can't say that about the '04. I hope but do not expect...

My only hope for 2004 La Lagune is to hold them. I can't imagine it is going to get worse than where it is at right now.
