For MEK's birthday:

La Conseillante 1988

A point with compote of plummy fruits, silky and refined, residual sweet fruits and complex mineral, graphite, earthy truffly notes. Right it its apogee a complete, refined and satisfying wine, with the format adding to the sense of occasion. A beautiful Conseillante from that mythical decade of the 1980s.

We had an exquisite Chateau Grillet to start:

Fantastic. A precious Right Banker this. And happy birthday to Maureen.

Every year that goes by, 80s Bordeaux becomes more precious (at least to me). I keep meaning to get a very cold (<50F) cellar or fridge where I can in effect cryogenically freeze these 80s claret to enjoy for the next 40-50 years.

Very nice. Grilette is something I've still yet to ever try.

Happy Birthday Maureen!
:ugeek:

Will we ever see Bordeaux again like that from the 1980s?

Happy birthday Maureen!

What about the Grillet?

I've been consistently underwhelmed. Hope your experience was better than mine!

I've got a bottle of the 08 in the cellar.
My French friends suggest opening and decanting quite some time before the meal.

All the best,
Alex

Thanks Alex!

I've opened a bottle of 2005 Grillet every year for the past 5 years, it is way too young. Only now are we starting to see the '05 uncoil. It was a pleasure to drink - mineral, lean, restrained, poised - but frankly, the best years are ahead. My 2007s and 2008s are in storage and they'll be sitting there for plenty more years to come.
