2003 Pontet-Canet

Post by Roel »

Château Pontet-Canet Pauillac 5eme GCC 2003: The last vintage before prices went skyrocketing high and out of my reach. Before amphoras and horses. I don't care, this is a stunner. Slightly shy nose at first, offering cherry, cream, cinnamon, lavender and soft cedar. On the palate superb. Lush, delicate, ripe, rich... A touch of minerals, cream, cedar, strawberry, cherry, soft oak, ripe tannins and a soft veggie- note add up to the complexity. On day two and three even better (not a hint of decline), but the score on day one is a well-earned 93+ points. A Pauillac that will improve further and further. Be patient.

Had this at Pontet Canet as well as a couple of weeks ago at my brothers place. Great wine and I think it is still on the upswing. Delicious along with many, many from this house.

Yes, this wine is really singing, and it will only get better.
It seems to have fully emerged from an awkward stage.

Brought a btl of this to a restaurant this evening to check in on its evolution and while it took about an hour to open up once the cowboy steak came out it was firing on all cylinders. 95+
