Take away Viet Nam and Uncle Lyndon was one of the greatest presidents.

Include Viet Nam and he was one of the worst.

A compelling documentary -- The Fog of War -- shows clearly just how much Vietnam was LBJ's choice.

Take away the sadistic near decapitations of his wife and her friend and O.J. Simpson was a nice guy.

LBJ was a sick, sadistic man who bordered on insanity.

There was a fascinating 2 hour show last night on PBS about James Garfield, really interesting if you ever have a chance to see it.

Of course Maureen Dowd has always had it out for Hillary, but unfortunately I tend to agree with her in this week's op-Ed.
Is Hillary electable?

Interesting results in NH. Did Chris Christie save the union on Saturday night with his hit on Rubio?
Was this Rubio's "oops"--"you're no Jack Kennedy"--Ed Muskie crying--Palin/Couric moment?

5th place for Rubio, it's a whole new ballgame! Who wins the Republican nomination is back in limbo, big time.

I still doubt Bernie's longevity (even though he's come a long way already), he has to compete in a big, diverse state to be taken seriously.

The much needed Trump win (from a Democratic perspective). It's wide open.
Bernie may not beat Hillary by himself but she has other issues that raise real doubts about her viability.
This race is wide open!
If that debate indeed mortally wounded that fraud Rubio, then Christie will always have a (very small) place in my heart.

So that will now be the last we'll see of Christie, Fiorina, and Carson.
We are left with:
Donald Trump: Good grief, could he actually win this thing? Yuuuuuge night for him.
Ted Cruz: Will never be president but we are about to go into the delegate-rich Bible Belt, which should be strong for him.
John Kasich: Notwithstanding his "strong" 16% showing <rolls eyes>, he is the Jon Huntsman of this race. He is going nowhere.
Jeb Bush: Barely holding on. His brother did really well in South Carolina. We need Jeb to continue to challenge Rubio.
Marco Rubio: Still the guy I fear the most. He is a worm. That Saturday night debate really hurt him. The big question is whether it was a mortal wound. Time will tell.

South Carolina is now vital. And if it's close like tonight, it will leave us in suspense at least through Super Tuesday. Bush will hang around at least until then no matter what goes down in South Carolina and Nevada, I'd wager.

Until the field thins more, it's Trump vs. Cruz, and Rubio vs. the Governors.

i'm glad you like this supporter of DOMA, the Iraq War, recipient of millions in Wall Street speech dollars, attacker of her husband's victims, proponent of the death penalty, supporter of gun rights while its popular then something fuzzy when it might not be, magical investor or $1,000 into $100,000 in 24 hours, negligent (at best) emailer, and on, and on, and on….
It's ALWAYS something with Hillary.
Hey, if it is Hillary against Trump or any of the other Republican frauds, I'll hold my nose and vote for the Hill-Meister. Aften all, she once touched my thigh repeatedly over and over for 45 minutes in a closed door meeting, just me and her, an eon ago.
But be careful what you wish for.
And if you expect a president who will do anything other than what the prevailing winds dictate, than Hill is not your girl… even if there is a special place in hell for voting against her. (What vile statements by Steinem and Albright.)
She's the Marco Rubio of the Democratic campaign: Say whatever needs to be said to get elected.
Ironically, the American public over and over again buys this shit and I still say it is better than even odds it will be Hill v. Bea <rolls eyes> -- the top two phoniest of the remaining politicians -- in the general.

The Jim How presidential odds as of February 11, 2016.
(Recognize, these odds will shift dramatically after the conventions).
Don't focus on whether these odds add up to 100%.

Candidate and Percentage Likelihood of Victory in the General Election:

Hillary Clinton: 55%
Marco Rubio: 25%
Donald Trump: 10%
Jeb Bush: 5%
Bernie Sanders: 5%
Paul Ryan: 2%
Joe Biden: 1%
Ted Cruz: < 1%
John Kasich: < 1%
Ben Carson: < 1%

Bernie's got plenty of baggage. He's playing a different arrangement of "Say Anything To Get Elected" than Hillary, but it's the same tune at its core. His "ability" to stay on message is starting to come across as either unwillingness or inability to address any of the issues that aren't right up his alley. I'll grant that he comes right out and says he's a revolutionary, but he's way short on details except for the issues that get people feeling the Bern. As much as I trust inertia in Congress to impede his socialist economic agenda, as President he would still scare me. If he gets the nomination, I might just stay home on election day. Depends on who's running against him.

Well of course they're all phonies. I'm just fatigued of Clintons and Bushes and all the harm they have done to the country/world in the past 40 years. But, as I noted above, Hillary is odds on favorite to win. Pretty hard to see the country electing a socialist, even though the vast majority of them would benefit from campaign finance reform, student loan reform, truly universal healthcare, banking reform, etc., etc. An intransigent Congress is no reason to vote against a president, why should we punish ourselves because a minority of the Republican party is holding up getting things done? As Virginia goes so goes the nation this year. I see I left Bloomberg off the list, I give him about a 1% chance.

I get the Clinton/Bush fatigue and being sick of all of the phoniness.

I like a fair number of Sanders' ideas, particularly campaign finance reform and banking reform/Wall Street accountability. I think his ideas about universal health care sound good but I fear for their implementation and don't trust him to do it right or pay for it properly. I worry about massive disruption and access to care issues, and not just because Clinton keeps harping on it. Single payer is probably the best answer (you wont hear that from many physicians) based on potential. The transition would be a bear. It's a long and complex discussion and one we should have over a bottle or two of fine Northern Medocs some evening.

You are right that an intransigent Congress is no reason to vote against someone. Or for them. What I was trying to say was Congress would pull the reigns in on much of what Sanders - or anyone for that matter - tries to accomplish if it represents real or certainly radical change. While that reduces the fear factor for things like turning the country Sandinista, it's still a screwed-up system where nothing gets done.

This is the first Republican debate I've watched and wow, they are going at each other's throats! Trump vs Bush XIV, Rubio calling Cruz a liar repeatedly, Trump getting in on it and calling Cruz a liar too (and a "nasty guy"). This is a brawl.

Where's the admiral when you need him.

"Gridlock! ...errrr, Gridlock."

He was Perot's Sarah Palin.
