Re: President Trump
I really like those three women in leadership in Michigan, Jon, the governor, attorney general, and Secretary of State.
They don't take any shit from the nasty old men and racist white dudes of the Republican Party.
Loved the AG today pointing out that falsely reporting a crime to law enforcement (e.g., "voter fraud") is itself a crime.

I read it was 3 - 0 to certify in Michigan as the Dom Don guy abstained (must have been the 07 Dom).

Blanquito, you are correct because the 4th vote was an abstention, not a "no."

Loved this Washington Post story - "Detroit had more vote errors in 2016 when Trump won Michigan by a narrow margin. He didn’t object then."
Re: President Trump
The GSA lady that’s been dragging her feet about releasing funds for the transition team has sent a letter, apparently in response to House pressure, indicating that she’s ready to go. And more courts have tossed Trump’s suits, some I believe with prejudice.
Apparently Trump wants his entire SS team, not the usual past-President detail, to move to FL to protect him. And wants fortifications at Mar-a-Lago, all at government expense. I have a better suggestion for guards and fortifications: the ADX Florence Superman prison in Colorado. If by some twist of fate he is untouchable for Federal crimes, NY State can offer accommodations at Rikers Island.

Re: President Trump
Boy is it good to see normal people, responsible adults who can speak in full sentences, who aren’t sociopaths, not to mention actual experts, introducing themselves as Biden's national security team.

Yes! I enjoyed listening to NPR this morning for like the first time in nearly 5 years.DavidG wrote:Boy is it good to see normal people, responsible adults who can speak in full sentences, who aren’t sociopaths, not to mention actual experts, introducing themselves as Biden's national security team.

Re: President Trump
For some reason Dan Quayle came to mind tonight, I googled him.
He was pretty partisan back in the day, by 1988 standards.
Come to find out, he was telling Orange Head to hang it up back on Nov 9th, the Monday after the election, more than TWO WEEKS ago....
Where have the "mere crazy" Republicans gone, as opposed to the "clinically insane" fascist Republicans currently ruling the roost??

...And remember the name Aaron Van Langevelde, my friends.
Most people will never realize what a hero this guy is, but he may just possibly have saved the country.

Re: President Trump
At least he didn't act cowardly the way the rest of his party has.
The most transparent national election in the country's history and they refuse to say the words President Elect Biden while letting DJT make repeated false accusations of conspiratorial fraud.
A pox on the Republican Party.

Re: President Trump
That is one of the better researched and written pieces that I've seen recently. Interesting about Ronna Romney McDaniel agreeing to drop Romney from her name at Trumps request when she was asked to lead the national Republican party.
Re: President Trump
I'll give him props for standing up to Trump, but hero? Like Chris said, he was just doing his job. These days, an honest Republican willing to do his job may be even rarer than a hero. That says more about the rest of the Rs than it does about Mr. Van Langevelde, though I do admire him.JimHow wrote:...And remember the name Aaron Van Langevelde, my friends.

As to saving the country? Nope. Not him. That was done by the people who voted for Biden. Michigan's electoral votes were eventually going to Biden one way or the other based on the popular vote, regardless of what the local or state certification boards did. The R-controlled legislature in MI doesn't decide.

Re: President Trump
So... Like 85% of Republicans believe that the election was stolen by massive voter fraud. The R-controlled legislature in MI doesn't decide.
If Republican-led legislatures in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Nevada -- or, pick any three out of those six -- decide to send separate delegations of Trump electors to the House of Representatives on December 14th, where the Republicans in the House will decide who wins, tell me who stops the Republicans?
So you think it's so impossible? Read up on the presidential election of 1876 sometime.
Hard to imagine it happening, but do you completely put it past this fascist and his cult? Even SCOTUS wouldn't be able to stop them.
Re: President Trump
I’m not saying it’s impossible. I’m saying it’s not going to happen.

Third Circuit Court of Appeals three-judge panel, in a decision written by a Trump appointee, throws out Guilliani's Pennsylvania appeal.
Next stop, SCOTUS.

Surprised that I've heard nothing about it on the news, a lot of attention has been devoted to the Barr AP interview, but as of late afternoon SCOTUS now has one of the Pennsylvania cases.
This should be interesting.

Re: President Trump
Good piece, Jon, thanks for sharing it. I think he about sums things up.
Although, I still say you can't rule out martial law.
With the indictment and arrest of unindicted co-conspirator Individual #1 shortly after January 20th, the fingerprinting and mug shot pose, and... can I dream, the ever so glorious perp walk in lower Manhattan on the horizon, Herr Orange will engage in scorched earth before he is through.

Re: President Trump
I will definitely breathe a sigh of relief at 12:01 PM on Jan. 20th, but I don’t think enough (ie >50%) of the military or police would support martial law if he tried it. Trump probably knows this, otherwise I bet he would call in the troops.

Re: President Trump
So I discovered that he is the Chairman of a non-profit (and non-partisan, whatever that is in today's environment) organization called Renew Democracy Initiative. The org has board members whom I would consider respected. And they have some interesting content on the site. One is a "project" called "Defining Democracy" with articles discussing a number of aspects of what makes up a democracy. They certainly have a point of view, but it is also pretty educational for those not familiar with come concepts and terms associated with our constitution and form of government.

Re: President Trump
He's truly like the crazy estranged father going through a divorce who kills the family and then himself on Christmas Eve.
He's going to burn the house down on the way out.
I'm truly beginning to think we need a divorce. No mas. No more Ted Cruzes and Mitch McConnells and Lindsey Grahams.
No mas. No mas....
Those 18 states... See ya.... No more. No more.

Re: President Trump
I’ve felt this way for over 20 years. The chasm is too wide, the GOP too debased. Democratic states should tell the Republican ones it’s over, let’s go our separate ways, and we’ll head off with three quarters of the GDP and start over.JimHow wrote: I'm truly beginning to think we need a divorce. Especially enjoying how his own appointees are shoving it up his ass.

Re: President Trump
“In 2016... the 2,584 counties that Trump won generated just 36% of the country’s economic output, whereas the 472 counties Hillary Clinton carried equated to ~66% of the nation’s economy... This time, Biden’s winning base in 509 counties encompasses fully 71% of America’s economic activity, while Trump’s losing base of 2,547 counties represents just 29% of the economy.”
