TN 2010 Gloria St Julien

Drank over two nights
Undrinkable at first; inky black and all over the place, fruit fighting with alcohol and felt like some syrupy mess. Much better the second night after relaxing in an open bottle on the kitchen counter; good fruit, smooth tannins, nice mid palate and a fine structure. This went well with some sauteed chicken with leeks and mushrooms. I suggest decanting aggressively, or better yet wait a while before opening. 90

Sounds like a big wine for chicken.

Thanks for the note, Jacques. I was quite impressed with the 2009 Gloria on release.

We had an 82 Gloria a couple years ago....and it was still singing. They can last longer than people give them credit for, although I'm sure that since they are pretty drinkable their entire life, people don't generally wait much. I've always loved their label

Thanks Jal.

I have a few of these, and with your comments, I'm sad to learn that I need to wait 15 years before opening my first bottle. But it is the signature of the best red Bordeaux, right?

By the way Jal, I've been lucky to get one special bottle, very hard to get here, I hope I can open with you one day : a single bottle of 2012 Roumier Chambolle-Musigny. Ok, it is only the "village" wine, but guess it will be special anyway.

Gloria from my past was very good young and would hold up well but never achieved the complexity of the really fine St Julien wines. I never had a Gloria that was at age five as you described the 2010, Jacques. I dunno if that means Gloria is now better or worse, but certainly it is different.

Nicolas, if you want to wait fifteen years for Gloria, be prepared to wait twenty for Roumier :D
Arv, I thought the chicken stew worked well, maybe a steak would have been fine as well.
Stefan, I have fond memories of the 1990, 1995 and 1996 Gloria, I don't remember having other vintages (though I may have; my memory isn't what it used to be). I agree that complexity wise, it's closer to a Meyney than a Ducru. A quaffer, sure, but I still enjoy the wines.

Mmmm 2010 Gloria with a nice sirloin, grilled medium.
Perfect combination. Nice youthful Bordeaux with a complementary grilled steak.
Mmmmm. Mouthwatering.

I also have always enjoyed Gloria, Jacques. '82 is another very good vintage for it.

If Gloria was around in 1855 wouldn't it have been a fourth growth like its sibling St-Pierre or maybe a fifth growth?

When I was living in CT I drank shed loads of a Gloria 1996, 2001 and 2002 at very reasonable prices from a place in Long Island, Islip I think.

I agree it is not Ducru or Leoville Barton but a very honest loveable St-Julien, which ages well.

Amen Ian. The 96 is a beauty.
Not a second growth but no slouch either.

I've really never run into anyone who tosses rocks at Gloria.

They have some relationship to Hortevie btw, which I think is supposed to be the informal tete du cuvee.

Their grapes come from all over the AOC so its a little weird compared to the traditional estates/chateaux.

I've only had Hortevie once, a bottle that Hound brought to the BWE St Julien tasting in NYC 2005.

Ch. Hortevie was bought by Bruno Borie in the mid-2000s and then became simply Borie. The wine is made in Ducru's cellars. Btw this information is courtesy Jeff Leve's website.

I bought two bottles recently. I drank the 2008 which is a nice wine. But correct and modern, and a little stripped of personality like some of Bruno's wines in the 2000s.

I just opened the 2009 tonight. I am optimistic given it was made along side the already legendary 2009 Ducru (RMP @ 100.com)

My apologies I think I confused Hortevie with Terrey Gros Cailloux.

Agreed that one doesn't see either of those much.
