RIP Paul Kanter

Post by William P »

Paul Kanter, a founding member of the Jefferson Airplane died yesterday. The Airplane, Dead, Quicksilver and many more made the 60's in San Francisco a memorable place..... I think.

That's the triad.

Funny I was on Cuba Street in Wellington, NZ this week and at one intersection I said to Kathy this is NZ's Haight-Ashbury. So not quite but just evocative at the moment.

We're getting there David. Hope all is well with you and the family.

How's Oahu Art? It's been a few year since Makalawena and Kona Brewing. Aloha.

I was on Oahu last November, which was the second time since moving back to Colorado a year before. Still fun, still paddling; my old beach house, Hale Nalu, was torn down for a McMansion.

Will be moving in May to Hale Nalu 2.0 at Honoli'i just north of Hilo. Should be there for a while, then who knows. Would be great to hook up next time you're there.

I'll be on the Big Island (again) April 29 through May 18th but I'll be on the westside. So it maybe possible to meet. I didn't know that you moved back but I haven't been on the board in a while.

Won't be arriving myself until the night of the 16th. We leave Colorado on the 11th but I'm stopping in San Diego for a canoe race.

Looking forward to it. I know you mentioned a good but dive-y looking wine shop in Waimea. We found a nice shop in Hilo, "Grapes" run by a real wino, Randy Nunokawa, and look forward to sampling some of his back tracks/deep cuts. I'm going to see if he can help me source some wines I sampled in New Zealand.

Kamuela Liquors in Waimea. It actually looks much better than three years ago. Grapes is a nice store, You now have Grapes, Kamuela Liquors, Costco, and Kona Wine Merchant. I still lean towards Kamuela. You'll drive by it from KOA to Hilo. There is also the store at Queen's Market in Waikoloa, but that's more than pricey.

Good to hear you're doing well Bill, are you still practicing law?

The old timers are indeed falling one by one. Gerry has been gone what, about 25 years now?

Hey Jim. After 38 years, I retired this April. Doing well but for a minor heart problem. No big deal.

Gerry died circa 1995. I don't see the tend moderating either.

Very strangely and sadly, Signe Toly Anderson died January 28, the same day as Paul Kanter.

David, that is bleeping strange. Signe was the lead singer before Grace (as you know). It's a weird world.

Yes, he was sent up the year we were in Newport, 2002-2003. How fitting the headline when he passed, "Providence's longest-serving mayor dies."

And by the way, 74 seems to be the magic number these days….

I'm hoping 74 is only the standard for rock stars.
