Had this for Sunday lunch. I bought kind of heavily into the 2004 vintage and have not been enthralled with it.
My experience with Canon is mixed. I adored the 82, for instance, but am not a regular follower of this wine.
We visited Canon last year on the BWE Magical Mystery Tour.

I opened 2004 Canon for Sunday lunch. It had a fine deep color and there was still some purple on the rim. It had a marked mintiness on the nose, but this was not really very expressive – neither two hours after decanting, nor later that evening.
The palate had the earthiness, purity, and minerality of that sector of Saint-Emilion, as well as some licorice overtones and a rich, chocolatey side. But it didn’t have the grip or the length I’d hope for in a wine of this stature. In other words, I had the impression of drinking a decent, solid, Saint-Emilion, but not one with the length and depth I’d hoped for.
As always, somone will say that I just needed to give it time. I’m not so sure about that. The wine has the stuffing to last, as such, for some time. But I don’t think it will improve.

Grapes Wine in the Westchester area is offering that for $54 currently.

Probably one of the last vintages that can be had at the half buck price.

Even if it doesn't sound like its money well spent.

Aside, what does Canon mean in French/Bordeaux?

Anyway.... Indeed one of the last of the old regime, same with Belair (or Bel-Air). And Figeac....

"Canon" has a number of meanings in French.

Other than a big gun or a sort of Church law, it also means:

- a glass of wine, especially in certain parts of France (Lyon especially)
- as an adjective, a beautiful chick (as in "Elle est vraiment canon!").

I was unimpressed by the 2006 we tried at the estate. It had a nice entry and you could detect some of the limestone rockiness that we saw in the caves. But the finish was abrupt and rough iirc and the cave visit was more memorable than the wine...especially Danny's crab like antics to get a close up of the 10,000 year old stalactites....

The sibling Chateau is of course Rauzan Segla which made singularly lacklustre wines in 2004 and 2006...but ever since 2010 has been kicking proverbial derrière...

What is awesome is hearing my nerd friends argue about the Star Wars "canon" and the place that the new movie has in its pantheon.

I haven't had many or any new vintages of Canon, but I am a big fan of the stuff I've had from the 60's, 70's and 80's. Gilman is a champion of this estate's style and I bought some 08 based on his write up.

'82 Canon is fantastic. Alas, I have only one bottle left of it. I want to drink it with HM$ because he loves it, too. I have not drunk a bottle of '04 Canon.

Tonight we drank a different '04---La Lagune with grilled quail. Lucie, not knowing what it was, rated it above the wonderful '03 Leoville Barton we drank the other night (93 as opposed to 92). I thought the L-B was a bit deeper, but it is close. The '04 has darker fruit than is normal for L-L--lots of sticky blackberries--and a lingering finish. This is another hit for our beloved La Lagune.

I've always liked the 2004 Lagune. I thought it showed well at a big Lagune & Cantemerle vertical in 2014:

I have about 8 bottles of 2004 La Lagune left in my cellar.
I like it but it's a big La Lagune, isn't it?

Yes, Jim, the '04 is bigger than the typical La Lagune.

82 Canon is great. The 89 Canon is great also.
