ISO Bordeaux chateau

Post by AlohaArtakaHoundsong »

Where Stephane Derenoncourt, Michel Rolland or Hubert de Bouard does not consult. It should be a pretty short list. Thanks.

The Mouiex properties would be one group that generally is fresher (La Grave a Pomerol etc.)

I think the de Leon crowd also follows their own drummer (LLC, Nenin, Potensac etc.)

I don't think the list is that short really, it's just that American import market likely favors those styles, so that's what is available in conventional channels.

Kermit Lynch doesn't import much Bordeaux, but when he does its unlikely to be from those camps, but its unlikely to have a review as well, if one would like to see one prior to purchase.

One issue is that this is a moving target, so keeping abreast of the changes in the barrel room can be challenging. I'm not sure where one finds this info readily either. For example, I just googled Cantemerle to see if I could find which enologist they use, but couldn't find out readily.

Wikipedia does have this list of chateau where Rolland holds decisive roles (such as owner, cellar master, oenologist, consultant):

As a counterpoint, here's Gilman's list of 'traditionalist claret' that he put up on Wine Berserkers in 2013. I may not be comprehensive and I don't agree with everything listed (I no longer consider Pontet Canet traditionalist, though I am still a fan of the wines).

Gilman’s Traditionalists List 12/2013
Pomerol:
La Conseillante
Certan de May (though a bit over-oaked these days)
L'Evangile
La Grave
Hosanna
Lafleur
Lafleur-Gazin
Lafleur- Pétrus
Latour à Pomerol
Pétrus
La Pointe
Providence
Trotanoy
Vieux Château Certan

St. Émilion:
Bélair-Monange
Canon
Corbin
Cheval Blanc
Figeac (up through 2011)
Magdelaine (up through 2011)
La Serre

Graves:
La Louvière (through 2011)
Haut-Bailly (again, a bit oaky these days)
Latour-Martillac (since 2006)

Médoc and Haut Médoc:
Beaumont
Cantemerle
Chasse-Spleen
Fonréaud
La Lagune
Lannesan
Laujac
Potensac
Sociando-Mallet
La Tour de By

Margaux Appelation:
Ferrière
D’Issan
Palmer
Prieuré-Lichine (bit spit-polished, but still with old school soul)
Rauzan-Ségla
Rauzan-Gassies

St. Julien:
Beychevelle
Lagrange
Ducru-Beaucaillou
Gruaud-Larose
Talbot

Pauillac:
Croizet-Bages
Grand Puy Lacoste
Haut Bages Libéral
Latour
Lafite-Rothschild
Lynch-Bages
Pichon-Lalande
Pichon-Baron (though very oaky these days)
Pontet-Canet

St. Estèphe:
Calon-Ségur
Montrose
Phelan-Ségur
Tronquoy-Lalande

Many thanks. I suspect if you add Derenoncourt the list you posted for Rolland would approximately double. HdB is not as omnipresent but is increasing his reach it seems. Meyney, for instance.

I'd just note that some of those aforementioned Rolland estates have quite different feels to them.

One would not taste some of the estates and think they are all carbon copy clones of each other.

His influence can be quite varied in how its implemented at various places.
