Is Lafite Rothschild in a slump?

Post by JimHow »

I was looking at the Live-ex blog posted by jckba.
It seems like there is a little bit of a buzz about Mouton these days.
And Pape Clement of course.
a couple of 2012s, interestingly -- d'Issan and GPL.
What happened to all the 100 point scores for Lafite?
It seems to be recording, shockingly, scores as low as the low 90s.
Even the 2015 gets "only" 94-96 per NM.
Is the northern Medoc in a slump?

Lafite is on the edge of St-Estephe...the further north you went the more the 15s got affected by the September rains according to NM ... did you see the Sociando scores?

I am quite reassured by the Lafite scores, I tried the 2010 at a tasting a couple of years ago and it was the first time I had ever encountered a Lafite which might be a bit over-egged.

Yes, Lafite is a dog. It hasn't even a boat on the label or anything.

They need a Game of Thrones label at the Rothschilds. If you will, the 2015 update on Rausan Segla's "pagoda" label pander (or should I say "panda") in 2009.

The only thing I do not like about Lafite is its price.

Blanquito
I thought I's seen that picture on the front of Black Sabbath's first album.
I just happened to be listening to it with my headphones on.
Pretty creepy. Looks worse listing to Warning.

Yeah, it was a one-off for its 350th.

One of these days I've gotta get ahold of a bottle of the 2010 Rausan Segla. It looked so good in that video tasting that Suckling did at the estate.

I should feel fortunate that when I was first getting into wine that others in our tasting group would occasionally bring a Lafite.

Nowadays I suspect only BWE type groups can do that.

It seems like anecdotally the folks who had some have sent them off to the market, to subsidize the rest of the cellar.

We have had blind tasting where Sociando beats out Lafite btw.

My Lafite went to auction when prices got silly. Held on to the 88 only (wedding year). Enjoyed the ones I drank. All in all I've got no complaints.

If you had continued to hold them, the prices would only become sillier. I decided not to sell my high scoring bottles until I really need the $$$ so as to maximize my investment.

That said, the prices of most older Lafite seem to be softening slightly since the Chinese frenzy over the easy-to-pronounce trophy wine has eased.

Lafite does not have a lot of great vintages but when you hit one on form, it's an unforgettable combination of power and elegance and they seem to last almost indefinitely.

Interesting, Stuart. I thought they plateaued aftet the Chinese interest peaked.

I've always been better at picking the buying opportunity lows than at recognizing the peak selling opportunities when it comes to stocks. Guess my performance with wines is consistent. It's a good thing that for the most part I'm a buy and hold kind of guy.
