TN: 2002 Malescot St-Ex

Post by NoahR »

002 Malescot St-Ex, PNP after purchasing from the Bassin's bargain bin for a shocking $25: A Bordeaux for the Loire-lover: in this cooler and less-than-stellar vintage, the Margaux perfume is there and there is a certain leanness and Chinon-like green pepper note but the fruit is all cassis. Deeply colored, no trace of bricking, and dusty tannins still present in a somewhat terse finish. It lacks in depth and richness but it has a flyweight's tenacity. Overall very enjoyable if not a poster child for classic Bordeaux.

This is my first post on BWE, btw. Have been a member of Wine Berserkers for quite a while. Sadly, I live in DC and didn't realize about the Gathering until basically the day after. In any case, I'm relatively young (barely sub-40) and relatively new to collecting but definitely one who enjoys Bdx, even if my experience pales to most on this board. Glad to be here.
Cheers,
N

Noah, great to see your post here and thanks for sharing your tasting note.

There is definitely a place for light, elegant wine. That seems to be the case with your Malescot.

Hope we will see you here often.

Thanks for joining us NoahR and taking one for the team, you are officially a BWEer!
I picked up some of those Malescots in the notorious Bassins 2002 Heist.

Welcome and thanks for sharing a note on that.

One mark of the true enthusiast is finding some aspect to enjoy in a wine.

Welcome Noah.

Appreciate your analysis of 2002 Malescot.

Unfortunately, I only own some 2005, but I had the 1993, 2002, 2003 and the 2004 in the past and liked them.

Welcome Noah. Enjoy reading your posts on WB and looking forward to seeing you post here too.

I missed the big BWE event this year due to some family health issues. Looks like I also missed the Bassins Bordeaux buying event of the decade with all of those heavily discounted 2002s. That's a board favorite vintage but it hasn't resonated with me.

This 2002 Malescot sounds right up my alley. The description reminds me a little of the 2002 d'Issan.
