2003 Chateau Pavie
Decanted for an hour and the nose on this wine is intoxicating and full of sweet blackberry and cherry, lead pencil, stone and cedar which lead way to a rich, full bodied wine that is jam packed with layers of ripe blue and blackberry jam, dark chocolate and spice notes that echo on the long finish. 97 points.

Loved the 1998 and 2000 Pavies, the only two vintages of that wine I have had.

Seems really a great Saint-Émilion, from that tough 2003. I trust you jckba. I remember the 03 Chateau Péby Faugères that i hated. But later on, I had the 2003 Chateau Angélus and thought like is was an excellent wine, even near great. So I guess that Pavie was having more in common with the Angélus, and even better. I hope one day to cross that wine in my life, or another modern Pavie.

I have two half bottles of 1998 Pavie left in my cellar, that is all.

Pavie seems to transcend vintage, terroir, etc.

PS: I just realized all that crazy Lalique crystal stuff my wife collects is owned by the same guys who are now running Faugeres.

Back around 2004 in NYC in Times Square at our 2000 dinner, when we had the winemakers from d'Issan, Corbin, and Lagrange there, we had some epic 2000 Bordeauxs, including the 2000 Pavie. It was my wine of the night, and a few other felt the same way. Some BWEers had brought the '82 Pavie and were trying to argue that the old Pavie was better than the modern Pavie. I'm going to make a bold statement: The modern Pavie was light years better than the old Pavie.

have had it twice...once with an '83 cheval....it showed well, better than a disjointed, hot version I tasted 6months prior with Orl. Bobby

I've only had a few of the older Pavies (maybe 89 or something) but I too think the modern Perse wines are way better across the board.

These are great times for enthusiasts.

Pavie was the only right banker I bought in 2003. Was this the wine that sparked the RP/JR clash of the critics, or was it an earlier vintage? I've yet to open either of my 2 bottles, but all this positive press is tempting.

Yes this was the vintage that sparked the outrage btw Parker and Jancis Robinson. If you plan on popping the cork soon I'd advise a 2 hour decant as it really came into its own at that stage.

None of the bottles were very exciting.....I probably would have voted pre-perse Pavie as the better choice
