I'll be "Howing" some ahi poke soon. Interested in the pairing.

Mmm ahi poke sounds good.
My greatest tuna/wine experience, I've mentioned before, Jackdaw brought a 1996 DRC Grands Echezeaux to that dinner in NYC… Heavenly.
I wanted to re-try the 12 GPL, planning to buy 3-4 more bottle if I like it as much as I did the first time.

I love that 2012 Momtazi, too bad MacArthur's is sold out of it.

The regular bottling of 2012 Momtazi is very good, Jim. The Special Selection, which I am sipping on now, is deeper. It started with a strong red cherry taste but black cherries overtook the red and morphed into Brazos berries. We can drink this or other St Innocents in September. This wine is far from maturity but is a pleasure to drink now. I have enough of it that I do not regret popping a cork on one today.

St. Innocent is one of the best domestic wineries, full stop.
Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
I got a Coravin a few weeks back and it has dramatically enabled and facilitated Howing all kinds of young wine. I never knew how much fun young wine could be.

Now you guys are in the spirit!
Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
On the third glass of the Momtazi, the typical dustiness of Momtazi comes out in the nose. So now it is not just a very good PN, it is a very good Momtazi. I think it will become a great Momtazi.

I have no problem whatsoever drinking red Bordeaux with tuna. The '12 GPL is a "pleasant" 90 point wine. At $48, I'll buy a couple more bottles and How them within the next 5-10 years.

Had the 2012 Momtazi and thought it was seductive and brilliant. Wondering what is this special selection? Can't find in winesearcher also. How is it different stefan?stefan wrote:The regular bottling of 2012 Momtazi is very good, Jim. The Special Selection, which I am sipping on now, is deeper. Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
CV, the SI SS are best barrels of the wines Mark produces. The are available only to wine club members and are more expensive than the regular cuvee. IIRC, Mark keeps the SS in barrel somewhat longer than the regular, but a tasting of older ones last summer at stefanJr's caused him to rethink doing that. Maybe stefanJr will read this thread and way in about that and about other differences in the vinification.
I think the 2012 Momtazi SS is somewhat more concentrated than the regular cuvee and not as forward. I have not tasted the two wines at the same time nor I have tasted them blind. I am happy to have a good quantity of both.

St Innocent SS is available to those not in the club however club members get a discount.

Really, Glenn? I have never seen an offer of an SS, and Mark says he makes just enough to fill pre orders from wine club members.
Wine club members get a discount on all SI wines.

Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
I liked my 2012 St. Innocents. How are the 2013s and 2014s supposed to be, and when are they available?
Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
stefan, I am pretty sure this is the case. IIRC an email offer goes out when SS is available, perhaps this has changed. I have some older vintages of SS but have not bought any recent vintages as the pricing has crept up.

Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
I have tasted very little 13 or 14 OR PN but 13 is a lighter high acid style and 14 is a warmer and riper vintage.JimHow wrote:I liked my 2012 St. Innocents. How are the 2013s and 2014s supposed to be, and when are they available?

Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
It looks like 13 will be better than 11 but not particularly good. I have not tried any 14.
Yes, prices on the SS have gone up so much that it is not clear to buy them, especially in a great vintage.

Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
I just bought six more bottles of the 2012 St. Innocent Momtazi.
Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
Good going, Jim. I am down to 12 bottles of it and 11 of the SS.
Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
Looks like it is $33-$34 for the 12 Momtazi? Is that a good price?
The Shea bottling, which I've had the most of in the past, is much more expensive.

Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
Yes $34.99 at Wine Exchange, I think that's what I paid at MacArthurs.
Re: Gonna "How" a GPL with some fresh grilled tuna...
My 2012 Momtazi was $27 at the wine club price, so $34-35 retail is good. Shea and Justice were both $41.25 for wine clubbers.
