RIP Donn Chappellet

Post by William P »

One of the first high quality Cali cabs I bought in the late 70's early 80's.

It's one of the few that I pick up here and there too. It can be like a Pauillac.

People have figured out how good they are and its gotten $$$

But there was a stretch there when the wines weren't winning favor (I still liked them personally) and those never rocketed up.

2013 sold through very fast.

I'd rather ask for forgiveness than permission so forgive me for some major thread drift ... though still in the "RIP" category.

March 8th I was in Rincon focused on nothing but nothing. Today I was googling "All Together Now" as someone had slipped the phrase into a marketing bit and was dumbstruck to see that George Martin died. Did not see any mention of it here. How could we have missed that after the Glen Frey, David Bowie dot dot dot ... did we miss that? I searched, maybe I missed the thread?

Had a Chappellet just once, in Honolulu maybe the first or second time I visited before I moved here. Seemed pretty good to me.

I wouldn't worry about drift.

Are you in Hilo now?

Its not that easy to find older Chappellets. I was taking a poke around last night.

A long time ago I lucked into some magnums of their 70's stuff from Garagiste.

Phillip Togni got his start there so his wines today carry some of that DNA, and very recent Clos du Val (now suddenly good) also came from Chappellet.

So if one wants to try similar styles those are others in the same camp. Although Togni is priced much like triple digit Chappellet's Pritchart Hill

Aloha Art. I just got back on May 19th, so it won't be for another year. Probably April 30 2016.
