2005 Haut Bergey: A nice $20-something Bordeaux….

Post by JimHow »

This is not a profound wine but it is lovely. It is very distinctively Pessac. It will never be La Mission, but these wines are going for $20-35 and they are well-crafted, "pure", smoky, with black cherries, under control alcohol levels, 10-20 year age-worthiness. They are a slight notch below their right bank relatives at Barde-Haut, but they are a few dollars lower in price as well. As delicious and seductive as the 2005 Haut Bergey and 2005 Barde Haut are, I think I give the 2012 versions of each even an extra point or two. These are lovely, well-crafted, well-priced Bordeaux wines. This 2005 Haut Bergey is still youthful but showing evolution and will drink well for at least another 5-10 years. The 2012 Haut Bergey goes for $23, which is a no brainer. 91 points.

According to WineSearcherPro, the lowest price for 2005 Haut-Bergey is $40 at The Chicago Wine Co. The next lowest price is $55. $40 is reasonable, but I would not pay $55.

I think the 2012 is every bit as good and it goes for $23.

I looked for the 2012 locally but it is not available. It is too hot now to have wine shipped here.
