Chateau Mouton-Rothschild 1993

Pure maroon, an erotic and lively bouquet with a pervasive underlying Pauillac lead pencil, overlaid with alluringly moreish rich cassis, soy and truffly, porcini notes. On the palate this errs to an austere leanness but is not dried out. It has a purity and richness but it lacks the mid-palate oomph and density you would get in a more powerful vintage like 1996 or 2005. This is a wine with a lot of class as those magical porcini and truffle notes come through. I think this will drink well for the next five or more years but is not a 'great' Mouton like say the 1995 neither a wine for the very long haul, like the 1988. But it gives a lot of pleasure now and has a sense of being a little bit special.

I went through a couple of bottles of 93 in the early 00's. It reminded me of a lighter 85 Mouton and was a deal for $50.
