2012 Haut Bergey… A very solid effort.

Post by JimHow »

I know I am repeating myself over and over, but these wines are the real deal! Just real solid, early drinking stuff. Very enjoyable. Medium bodied, 12.5%. This is not La Mission but it is just a real pretty wine, at $22.99 a superb deal. Can't recommend it enough. I bought 6 more bottles of 2012 Barde-Haut and I'm going to buy another case of 2012 Haut Bergey to add to the ten or so I have remaining. And I'm not going to age them. No need to. I'm going to drink them up within the next few years.

You should go factory direct. I always wanted BWE to get our own container.

Concur. Very impressed with the Garcin managed/owned Chateaux. Going to try a Clos L'eglise soon.

Yeah, 2012 Haut-Bergey at $22+ and 2012 Barde-Haut at $26+ are two of the deals of the year.
If the BWE Wine of the Year were being selected at this halfway point I would go with our first right banker ever, 2012 Barde-Haut.

Stefan,

We concur with your view on the 2005 Haut-Bergey that we had Friday night wth rib steak. Classic Pessac notes with leather/tobacco and brambly fruit. Drinking beautifully now. Great QPR.

When is it time to crack open a case of the 2010 Haut-Bergey?

I wasn't taken by the first bottle of 2012 H-B I drank a couple weeks ago. The flavor was more of stewed fruit than I like.
To be fair, I'm not sure it was a good bottle. I got it at the local Total Wine. Every bottle of H-B in the bin had stains on the label.
I picked the one with the least obvious staining.
I'll need to find another source for my next bottle. Maybe the new Total Wine in West Hartford.

Do mean bin soiled labels, or wine stained labels?

The stains were somewhat like a watermark, darker but not really another color.
Looking closely at my bottle, I could see where something had dripped on the shoulder(?) of the bottle, apparently while it was standing.

There was a faint trail on the glass, down to the label. In my case, the label stains were relatively small.
Some of the bottles had larger stains which may have been darker or mottled.

At first look I thought it might be an intentional effect applied to the paper used for the labels.
But the Saranty Imports label at the bottom on the back side of the bottle clearly had been wet.

Racer Chris - Not sure which CT TW store you purchased this seemingly cooked btl from but I would bring it back and speak with a store manager as they should really be standing by the wines they sell especially for current releases.

I've seen this too at TW. I don't think the wine is damaged. I think they just throw the wines into bins, without much care. So an $80 bottle which might have some potential value in being resold later, and thus have its visual condition matter, gets the same 'slap dash get it on the shelf' approach from their stock boys filling up tubs of $8 wines.

=====

Not related to TW but as always, inspect everything you buy upon receipt, especially from remote sellers. I just noticed that some wine that I'd expected/paid for the Sonoma estate level bottling has ended up being a much larger and lower value AVA. 9 mos or so after delivery so not much I can do now, but an annoying lesson. Not that the problem happens much, but its one that is more likely with CA producers with big, confusing lineups.

I am a fan of these moderately priced 2012 Bordeaux. Pleasant to drink young and will add character with mid-term aging. I'm a fan of Barde-Haut and La Fleur de Bouard in 2012 as well. Also pleased by 2012 red and white Burgundy, 2012 German Riesling and 2012 Southern Rhone. I guess I just like 2012 wines.

We had a 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Piedling in a Lewiston French restaurant last night, I never heard of it before but it was very lovely.

The Manchester store is right off I-84 and only a few miles from my business.
That's where I bought the bottle with the stained label mentioned upthread.
If you let me know when you're coming I'd be happy to go shopping with you. :)

I was just there picking up some white Bordeaux on Monday and bought some bottles of 2014 reds as well:
3x Chateau Bois Redon (75% Merlot, 25% Cab) - On sale, Mix 6 price at $7.18. I drank a few bottles of their 2013 vintage. This is better. Simple but made in a classic style, decent for a weeknight meal with burgers.
2x Chateau de La Huste (second wine of Chateau Dalem I think) - Mix 6 price at $17.98. I have a number of bottles of the 2012 which is somewhat brambly like many Fronsacs I think. I'll try the 2014 later this week.

Couldn't resist getting another 2010 Potensac at $26.98 and one of 2010 Talbot at $67.48 while I was there.

I haven't been to the new West Hartford Total Wine store yet so I don't know exactly where it is.
I do want to go there. Online I've seen items which I want but are no longer stocked in the Manchester store.

Northern California Costco's might have this in stock for $20/per.

Call ahead if one wouldn't make the trip otherwise.

The service desk can check if they have the name on premises although cannot verify the vintage.

Also -- surprisingly -- I noticed outpost #471 had the 2010 Montus [Madiran] in stock for maybe $25.

That's an estate/wine/grape I've not tried in probably 15 years.

I passed, still remembering my last mouth puckering experience with the Tannat grape.

It's a real geek wine from the French southwest, and surprising to see at a mass market big box.

Montus takes for ever to come around into its drinking window. I have a few 96s left and they are no where close to resolving the powerful tannins. Not good enough to sit on a wine for that long.

One would get many vinuous piety points for bringing a Montus to a tasting event.

I picked up two bottles of '12 Haut Bergey today. Sale price goes until Sept 15th. $17.21 each including state tax.
Grabbed a couple each of '10 Cote Montpezat and '12 Dalem, also on sale.
And I took 5 more bottles of 2014 Bois Redon at $7.61 each on sale, to offset the one bottle of '11 d'Armailhac I splurged on.

Sipping on a 2012 Haut Bergey, grilling a steak, starting yet another little mini-vacation til Tuesday morning, man I've taken 6 weeks off so far this year, that is a record for my working career.

It's a nice wine. It take a little time to get going out of the gate. This is not La Mission. But at $17 tax included, that's a nice deal. Very nice with steak.

I have enjoyed the '05 Haut Bergey. However, the bottle I opened last night was not impressive. The wine was too sharp for the fruit. Probably I should not open another bottle for a couple of years.

…or maybe it's not going to get any better.
I had a similar experience with an '05 Haut Bergey.
I thought it was shallow, far exceeded by that chocolate delight of a 2005 Barde Haut.
I think Haut Bergey should just be drunk young, like this 2012.

I popped one of these tonight, and it confirmed my suspicion that the previous bottle was slightly flawed.
It really is a nice wine, from a difficult vintage. I was reminded a bit of CdR at one point.
Before the sale ends I've gotta get a few more to drink over the next year or two.

Very nice, the latest 2005 Haut Bergey I had was very lovely, rivaled the 2005 Barde Haut.
I'll probably pick up another case of the 2012.
