Wow this puppy is in a major stage of hibernation. Closed, disjointed, streaky, great margauxberry nose, I'll say that, but this adolescent is closed for business, no matter how much coaxing I gave it over three hours. That said, it is clearly a profound Margaux. It is a 50 year wine. It is hard to believe that 2009 produced a wine as herbaceous as this appears. This is more than a green streak. But it is full-bodied, opaque purple/black, rich, MODERN. Yes, modern. How will this develop? Time will tell. Rating: No rating.

So even the 2009 are going threw a dumb phase? I read somewhere that the best vintages never really shut down totally, and are good to open at any ages...

I'm with you Jim, that 2009 Chateau Giscours will blossom in a few years, but as you prefer young wines, will it be too late for your taste? That is the question.

Wow very surprised by this...the '09 giscours seemed like wine devoid of this.

I am not the least surprised this has shut down, not least because Giscours is a notably ageworthy wine, but it is useful information because I can let my case sleep for another 20'years. I guess that is why Du Terte was invented. To drink while your Giscours sleeps, just as we used to drink Rosso whilst waiting for our Brunello.

What is wrong with drinking before a trial?

I have 7 straight acquittals in the past 14 months but I'm afraid I'm going to lose this one, a little old lady robbing another little old lady of her pocket book.
I'm raising the old "abnormal condition of mind" defense (because that usually works with juries <rolls eyes>), I'm thinking of blowing up a 1970s Marty Feldman poster as a demonstrative exhibit.

Yes, the 2009 Giscours was very shut down and yes, it is going to be a 30-40 year wine. It's immense but I'm going to let my remaining 8 bottles sleep well into my seventies.

I decided to pop my 1st of 4 bottles to check in on its progress. Had along with some steak tips since my wife is out with her friends tonight and can't guilt me about red meat.

Was closed and primary on opening but after 90 minutes it started to blossom and show its stuff. Really black fruited and packing a punch. Still young but well balanced and with tons of upside. I'm digging this now but am looking forward to its future. I hoping this is a indicator of how good the 2015 will evolve to.

I have full wooden cases of the 2009, 2010 and 2016.
I really hope that I can drink them before I am 103 or above.

Do you have an idea on when they will start reaching maturity?

Those are three beautiful vintages, Claudius, I recall the 2009-10 as big wines with great stuffing, but really haven't really tried them since their release.

I think over the last decade or so I have become more enamoured with the wines of Margaux.
No other place on earth gives the same flavour profile.

I have a few odd bottles of the 05 which I brought over from Australia so maybe I should leave them for a while longer. I did review it here several years ago and it was surprisingly open and really fruity.

Indeed, Margaux is ion a roll, rising to even greater heights. 2016 is such a great overall vintage that the 2016 Margauxs exceed even the 2015s from that “Margaux vintage.”

I have my eyes on a case of a mystery 2016 Pauillac, stand by for a possible announcement.

I've had this a couple times...one was with Orlando Robert about 8 yrs back and the wine showed a tad underripe....the second time was a couple years ago and it was singing....no underripe notes

I snagged a 6 pack of the 2016 Giscours at Costco last year for $45/per (to go with some 2016 Cos, Lynch and Purple Baron)… when to try these I wonder?

Can’t believe the prices you guys get in the USA.
Seriously that is a great price.
I am not even thinking of opening 2016 classed growths for a long time and just hope they don’t all out live me. They have the structure for long ageing are are likely to shut down for a decade or so. Even the basic Medocs are tight now.

Why not? The 1970 is still drinking beautifully.
For me the pick of modern Giscours is 2010. Absolutely breathtaking wine. Margaux in general were very strong that year.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing the other day Mark.
When we say "50 year wines," we are talking about wines from the 1970s, an era many of us have experienced.
Some of the 1980s wines will be hundred year wines.

I had a 75' a couple of weeks ago that was sublime and got it for $69 from Cellaraiders. One bottle left and no rush to open.

In 1970 Giscours was making excellent wines. Up until the beginning of the 1980s, Giscours was the third best Margaux IMO.

Giscours was off my radar for some time but I bought the 2005, and even as a young wine, it was quite delicious.
I have a few left somewhere in the storage unit, and will just forget about them for now.

The recent history of Giscours has been rather difficult, with fraud charges, management changes and legal battles within. Yet I have bought it regularly now since 05 and hope that it will be as good as some of the older wines.
